Default Rear view mirror

I just bought a 2002 XKR, and it seems to be in very good shape. However, the rear view mirror keeps falling down (off the mount). I can't find a set screw or anything else that seems to hold it in place. Anyone have any suggestions?

MHumble,
I went through a similar problem with my 1997 XK8. In my case there was no set screw. The mirror case has a press fit onto a ball fitting that is held by a plastic grip and a ring screw. In other words, if the plastic grip is broken, (on the back of the mirror) I think the mirror is kaput. The ring screw will not tighten. In my case the mirror dimmer liquid had also separated. The liquid dimmer and the joint were not holding. I was lifting the mirror into place every 2-3 minutes. In general, a pain. If your mirror dimming liquid is separating, and the mirror will not hold a set. You might consider a replacement. I bought a used rear-view mirror with a good ball joint., I have been very happy. However, if I had it to do over, I would buy a rearview mirror with the backup camera and never look back (pun intended, I just could not resist!!!!) Do a search on the forum and you should find the numbers and lots of posts about the rear-view mirror problems and part numbers for the camera option, or the stock rear-view on amazon.
Cheers,
Dennis

I'm sorry I was not clear in phrasing my question. The mirror bracket has come loose from the metal piece that is attached to the windshield. the bracket slides back onto the metal piece that is attached to the windshield, but there is nothing to hold it there.

Ok, I think I figured it out. The mirror bracket is held in place by friction and a small "bump" on the piece attached to the windshield. I took out the metal clip inside the mirror bracket, and gently squeezed the slides to increase the friction.
It seems to have worked. More later if it doesn't.

I'm glad you've got it fixed. Lots of good info on this forum. Sorry, that I assumed your issue was the same as mine. I hope it did not hold you up.
Cheers,
Dennis

No worries. I appreciate the quick response. The "hammer tap" gave me the information I needed to fix it. Told me that it was a friction fitting and that there was no longer enough friction.

Guys, I recently purchased a 2003 XK8, and while it runs well, I have the same issue about the inside rear view mirror. I tried tightening the ring screw mentioned before, but my fingers are just too chubby, so I squirted a small amount of Super Glue around the ball joint area and it seems to be working. But I like the idea of buying a replacement with the back up camera; please email me the source.

Try this post. New idea for replacing inside rear view mirror. I'm new to the forum, so I don't know how to link a post, but if you search for back up camera, it will come up.
