I'm left with 3 questions:
1.Does anyone know what the solid-brown wire from the 1996 XJ8 Mirror is used for? I believe this is pin 6 on the male-connector (Yellow) of the mirror harness
2. Can else anyone confirm that the side-view mirrors are supposed to go dim in sync with the rear view mirror on a 2000 XKR?
3. I noticed before I made all the reairs that the backlighting on the instument cluster is always on regardless of the light switch position. Even after making the repairs the backlight remains on regardless of the switch position. Is that normal? is there something else that controlls the backlight?

The side mirrors didn't dim on my 2001 XK8 4.0 ltr and neither do the ones on my 2005 XK8 4.2 ltr. Dimming was main mirror only.

With both these vehicles instrument panel backlighting is on regardless of lighting switch position. When all four main bulbs blew together in my instrument panel, I realised why this is needed even during daylight.

1996 Sedan Mirror--Three wires:

These are connector terminal numbers, car side harness. Mirror side colors can vary.

1. White/Slate = Ignition Pwr
2. Green/Brown = Tap off of reverse lamp circuit [cancels mirror dimming in reverse for safety]
3. Black = Ground

No electrochromatic side mirrors for your model year.

I think others have covered the rest.

Cheers,

Thanks all for you replies. I clan close out the project for the rear view mirror. It seem to be working for everything as it should. So for those looking for a chaper alternative. This should work. I think the next thing I will have to do at some point is get the gel pack replacement.

The main light switch corrected my main concern about the blackout situation. The main beams will stay on now when I switch the mlinkers on. The dash is contantly illuminated and that is a normal condition. Now I have to fix a section that is dimmer than the rest.

Thanks!!!! You guys are the bomb
