Hi guys,
I’ve got my car up on stands and checking the rear wheels for play both have a slight movement when I push and pull the top and bottom. It’s about 1 to 2mm.
there is no side to side movement and the fronts are fine.
Hi Kevin,
I'm afraid that's not OK. It's a sure sign of wheel bearing wear.
I've heard a lot worse though and the UK MOT spec is a bit ambiguous in what amount of play is acceptable..... how much is excessive ?!
Something else just crossed my mind. Your play condition could also be due to wear in the Universal Joint/s because these have a dual role and act as the upper suspension arm - same principle as the e-type shown in this diagram.

is this normal?
Thanks

I do have slight 12-6 movement also, fortunately local MOT does not consider them as issue because there is no 9-3 movement at all (apparently Corvette does have similar issues and rear structure).
Although what parts exactly to inspect/change to remove play would be nice to know as I am planning to drop rear package on next winter.
I would go so far as to say it is quite normal to have 1 or 2 mm play when measured at the top of the wheel. It will not be apparent with car back on the ground and inward load back on diff output shaft bearings.
l replaced those bearings some years ago because of this free play and brand new bearings made virtually no difference.
