Hi again.

Global opening/closing.

If you turn your key anti clockwise in the door barrel and hold, all your windows and the top will open. Turning the other way and hold will close all your windows and the top.

The directions may be opposite as I have a left hand drive.

Ah. Never heard of that before. Must try it sometime. Makes me wonder if the problem is in the door now.

I use the key often to open and close the windows and top. It does not seem related to the gremlin.

Looking at the diagram for the car the only connection to the front and rear windows is the body processer module (the one inside the car) and the grounding system. You were asked to do a hard reset did you do that? If the hard reset did not work I would be checking grounds and the attached oneline will help you find them. Was not sure what car 2000 or 2001 so you have both.

Apologies for the delay in getting back to this. Work getting in the way.

I have done a hard reset but no improvement. I will be fitting new relays tomorrow and see if that does any good but I doubt it. Not entirely sure if it is a 2001 or 2000 myself. I suspect 2001 model but........

Still not got to the bottom of this but another thing has cropped up that makes me think I have a problem with the SLM. Sometimes when I unlock the car, the locks seem to go a bit haywire, locking and unlocking themselves 4 or 5 times before sorting themselves out.

I have to disconnect the battery today to try and fix an airbag fault indication so will pull the SLM and have a good look at it then. Is there anyway to test this module out of the car ? (will also recheck the relevant earths).

The cycling lock syndrome is usually due to a bad microswitch in the door latch. It may not be related to the original problem.

If it is a bad microswitch wouldn't it do this every time I unlock the car ? At present it does it about 1 in 10 times and coupled with the window problem makes me suspect the SLM. Having said that I could easily be wrong and if the SLM checks out ok then I will be looking at the microswitch next.

Microswitches often fail intermittently.

Ah. I always thought that when they failed that was it.

Just hoping that it is related to the windows though as at least I would have a clue what the cause of that issue is

Well, Pulled the SLM and had a good look at it. Absolutely immaculate, no dust, signs of water etc, if I didn't know better I would swear it was brand new. Next thing to look at are the door microswitches.

Really want to get to the bottom of this now. So any other suggestions for the rear windows would be very welcome.

Give me the rundown on what your windows and doing or not doing and what buttons you are using. For whatever reason I am not following your sequence.

Ok. The rear windows are dropping (not every time - about 1 in 3) when I lower either of the front windows. If I try and close them using the roof button I get no response. I have tried opening the roof when this has happened and the roof opens normally, When I try to close it again the roof raises but will not latch. I can latch it ok using a hex key but the rear windows will not raise. (if the roof is opened when the rear windows have been up to start with then it closes without issue)

After a seemingly random length of time, the roof switch will close the windows (anything from 5 minutes onwards with no obvious reason).

I have tried shutting down the car and restarting with the rear windows still down and this makes no difference, same with trying after a hard reset.

I have tried using the universal closing method with the rear windows down with no success (front windows close but rears stay down).

This is a bit frustrating as I do have a few other things going on with the car at present that are unlikely to be related but might be. Door locking dance, airbag light (looks like the clockspring is failing, indicator cancellation when turning right does not cancel itself and the airbag warning only comes on after turning the wheel, although not every time).

Any assistance on this is appreciated as it currently has me stumped.

I would be looking at a grounding issue first then I would be looking at the security module. You can have it tested ASI is a company that has done work for me. A visual inspection is not sufficient.

I did initially think it may be a grounding issue so checked and cleaned the ground (Battery ground ?) in the boot/trunk and the one beside the Brake servo (EM1 ?) but will check as many as I can find tomorrow.

(just remembered that I plugged in my OBD reader a few days ago and immediately got warnings for low brake fluid, no abs, gearbox fault and restricted performance through the cars display, reader could not clear them so I unplugged the reader and restarted the car - all warnings disappeared. Now wondering if the OBD port and windows etc share a common ground that may be problematic).

Your online for your car has all the ground locations and I would be checking all of them.
