Default Rearview Mirror - Loose Ball and Socket

Good Morning,

I have searched for threads on this and come up with threads about the electrochromatic part going bad or leaking, but my issue is that some type of plastic tab has broken around the ball and socket part of the mirror and now it is no longer tight. Have you guys come up with any good fix for this or best to just get another mirror? This happened a couple of years ago and now again to the replacement mirror. It would be nice not to have to buy mirrors every couple of years. I am good at repairing and improvising so before playing around with it I wanted to see if you guys have come up with anything. I am also willing to send it off for repair if needed.

Thank you,

Rob

I would investigate whether a small hole could be drilled into the ball-and-socket portion, then installing a set screw into the drilled hole....

Mine did this and it was all downhill after that. I tried a bit of everything with limited and temporary success. I eventually out off desperation, epoxied the mirror to the ball and permanently set it to my driving position. Best of luck.

I haven't had this failure but if I did then I would try dipping the ball in something like plastidip. Am guessing that would restore the dimensional gap and give it some grip.

That's a decent idea as the primary driver is me. However I would need to come up with a DO NOT TOUCH sign when my wife gets in it though.

Nah, just change her seat memory positions until she can see behind her. 😁

Not to hijack this thread, but both my side mirrors move more freely that they should. This at the 'Fold' joint. I tried adding a piece of tape between the fixed base and the moving mirror. No real success. Considered epoxy, but not there yet.

Ha thanks for the clarification.

I actually found a spare mirror in a parts stash that I have (got a bunch of parts off of a wrecked XK that my dad came across), so good for now. But in the meantime I will epoxy the broken one in order to have as a backup.
