remote

A hint on Model and Year would be relevant to this question. The remote design changed from coated buttons in early models to microswitches in later ones.
Possibly lost 'pairing' with the vehicle. This can be caused by taking too long to change the batteries or pressing buttons whilst doing the change.

I've added those vehicle details to your forum signature so it should appear automatically with your next post.
The early remotes sometimes need dismantling to clean the buttons to make good contact again but it's a remarkable co-incidence for this to happen at the same time as changing the batteries. Many parts stores have testers to check remotes are emitting a signal which is a way of eliminating this as a possible cause.
You could go straight to reprogramming the remote. See this thread in the FAQ's if you need the procedure:

If you have more than one remote, they must be programmed together.
