Replace timing chain tensioners

Absolutely!!!. If you don't have the metal body tensioners you really should change them while you have the cam covers off. You might be lucky and once you remove the covers you find they have already been changed.
Below is a posting for using the zip tie method. It works and makes it relatively easy for a DIY.

Tricks to remove old tensioner
thanks for the feedback am going ahead with replacing existing tensioners. It looks like old tensioner will just slide out from underneath timing chain as no ridges etc on front of plastic shim (pulling it back away from front of car) once hold down bolts are removed. Is it really necessary to remove cam cap bolts?
no parts til Monday so I’ve got time to scope it out. ( maybe not such a good idea)

The zip tie method is the simplest. And, yes you must remove 1 camshaft. The tensioner will not come out from underneath. You remove the cam bearing covers and lift it up then just tilt it up from the rear to get the tensioner out.
Also when you order the tensioners make sure to order the shorter bolts. Pay attention to the cam bearing covers they are numbered in the order installed and the direction.
Get yourself a good 1/4 inch drive torque wrench that has an NM scale. Harbor Freight has one for around $10.00 or so.

Yes, the "lower" camshaft in each bank is the exhaust camshaft. The intake camshaft also has the primary timing chain sprocket on it and would require a lot more work to tilt up.

The below link will take you to the sticky that I did at 41K miles on the upper tensioners. I wasn't as careful about getting the cam flats aligned up with the head surfaces as I probably should have been. But since all I did was raise and lower the cam uniformly for the length of the cam there was no problem. Be on the safe side and get the cam flats at the front of the cams horizontal with the head mating surfaces. The right one is pretty close. The left one could have been better. But it worked and all is well.
