Default Replacement Engine

Hello my learned friends. I am looking for someone who has accomplished an engine swap. Sadly, my 190,000 mile 2001 Jaguar XKR engine died. Can I buy a used XK8 engine (same vintage, same displacement) and do an engine swap, reusing my existing supercharger, harness wiring, etc.

I believe the XKR and XK8 engines have very different specifications. I doubt if they are interchangeable....

Hi Jon89. Thanks for the quick answer. I appreciate your intel. Trying to "find" an XKR replacement engine is turning out to be a real challenge.

You may want to ask forum member "motorcarman" in Texas if he can help you locate a replacement engine....

depends upon your interest in the car. It is an XKR which will have more value. Perhaps one can find a used R motor. The XK8 motor is very different and will create a terrible hybrid.
Since an R has more inherent value, why not have your motor rebuilt by Jasper or some other recognized firm to keep it as a numbers matching example.
Lots of things come into play such as the car's base condition and history, however there is a line about the devil that you know. Rebuild the current motor and everything else about the car stays the same, perhaps a lot of it good.
Plus having a warranty from a respected outfit is never bad.
I would overhaul or do something major like rings on an XK8 motor, but would leave the R for someone more experienced.

The supercharged engines have a lower compression ratio and they don't have the VVT, variable valve timing. If you put your supercharger on a N/A engine I don't think it would last very long. What is the issue of your supercharged engine?

hello RobRoy. Forgive the long winded reply. I wrote this and sent it to my son. It was easier to just paste it here as a full (very full) reply to “the issue with my xkr engine”.


Friday, on I-75 south my wayhome from therapy in Riverview, engine gave out. Forced car (violently knocking) 4 miles to exit 240. Lots of dashboard warnings, and loud sound of metal mashing. When off the ramp (yea) in front of Big Lots, got stuck at light. When light changed, engine died. I was able to start it and rev to about 3,000, but when I put it into gear, stalled. Tried several times.


Another driver helped me push car to front of Circle K, where Sunpoint picked up car for flat tow to your place.

I had to use battery only to raise convertible top (successfully). Unfortunately, that drained what was left of battery.

I'm guessing the timing chain. This may have also trashed the engine (I hope not). If you jump the battery, you might be able to start (requires considerable cranking). You might have to pump the accelerator. It won't stay running without significant accelerator assist.

More than likely it would need major work if it's repairable. I think your best bet is to find a replacement supercharged engine. It would also need to be an AJ27 to make the exchange simplier.

I found an engine in FLORIDA and one in Decatur GA. (https://www.car-part.com/)

The engine can be from a 4.0 SC AJ27 X308 or X100 (2000-2003 XJR or 2000-2002 XKR)

Sorry to hear this. I had a very similar experience 5 years ago with my 05 Xjr. Locked the engine up on I-75 southbound. I actually ended up ordering a used replacement engine from Texas and swapping that one in. Was a rough experience, but we learn from these.

Take advantage to do all other maintenance tasks before putting in the replacement engine: timing components, timing cover seals/gaskets, valve cover gaskets, rear main seal, motor mounts, new belts, water pump, etc. And knock sensors (not sure if the same on the 4.0r vs 4.2r), I forgot those and then had to remove the supercharger after installing everything just to replace them.

Thanks you JazzyJags for the great suggestion. Yes, while it's out of the engine bay, I plan to do all I can to reduce/avoid near future additional labor cost.

These folks are not experts. Label on last photo says XJ8.

Your learned thoughts please?

The Normally Aspirated 4.0 1999 onward X100 and X308 engines are AJ27.

The 1998/99 XJR 4.0 engines are AJ26 and will NOT be a bolt-in-fit.
The X100 did NOT have the SC option until 2000MY here in North America.

The NA and SC are not interchangeable.

The listing is confusing. The compatibility chart says Normally Aspirated but the description says SC? (I would call or contact them)

I completely agree with you. Everything about the listing is confusing. The compatibility test is negative. The only savings grace is the photo is correct. These folks are on my call Monday morning action items list. thank you for your patience with me -- it's been a rough weekend.

Hey Bob, sorry to hear about your predicament.
Nine years ago, I had my 2001 XKR motor replaced with a new 2005 crate engine from a supercharged Range Rover sport. It did take a fair bit of fettling to sort, but it was well worth it and it has been a brilliant investment ever since.
My mindset at the time was, I had lost the car of my dreams. A total loss. So for the relatively smaller investment of a new motor I get a relatively new car and most importantly, the vehicle that I really want.
I work on boats and re engine-ing a vessel is a normal part of preventative maintenance. So my mindset had already been pre adjusted to this type of issues.
As JazzyJags said this might be a great chance to upgrade. Have a check around at where others of the AJ motors series where used.
