I did my gaskets about 2 months ago. Used OEM and I smeared a small film of VW sealer D 454 300 A2 on the mating surface. No leaks so far. yeah, it is ~$100 a tube but highly recommended.

Everyone seems to quote the higher of the two figures, although I have also seen people pick a value in the middle. It would be nice to have a definitive answer.

TBH the difference is so slight I would seriously doubt it makes a noticeable difference - probably more important to make sure all the bolts are torqued in sequence and to the same value. I was always taught to clean threads and lubricate lightly before torqueing.
