Which scanner for early cars?
Hi,
I'm looking for a good scanner for a 1997 model.
Considering the icarsoft CR V2.0 or Pro, or similar - which I believe are the later versions of previously recommended icarsoft models.
But do they work for ALL modules on these earlier cars?
Any others ***Proven**** to access ALL modules on 1997 ish cars?
I already have 4 scanners including an Autel MD 801 'MaxiDiag' which is supposed to do everything but doesn't do much.
I also have a vxnano J2534 but haven't had much luck with the IDS/SDD - are there any recommendations/downloads for going this route?
So I'm not asking about basic engine/transmission stuff which my other scanners will read.
But I really want to know about ABS, Aircon, Instrument pack, Body Control Module, Security module, Door and seat modules etc.
Modules labelled IPK, BPM, SLH, DDM, PSM, etc - modules which I can't read and don't know what will.
Thanks in advance for any help.... John
(I posted a version of this in the old general tech thread on scanners, but it's probably better here)

I purchased one scanner (Topdon Artilink 600) it does not even power on. I decided to go for the Jaguar IDS system. Not as "handy" as a scanner but has all the functions and will work.
You will need the correct cable. I purchased a kit from British Diagnostics, worth it as far as I am concerned.

Which modules you can see on it apart from Engine & Transmission?
e.g. ABS, Aircon, Instrument pack, Body Control Module, Security module, Door and seat modules?
Modules labelled IPK, BPM, SLH, DDM, PSM, etc
Or can you remember about how many modules in total you can access?
John.

Hi John,
Glad to help. I get ECM, TCM, ABS, IP, BPM, DDM (drivers door), DSM (drivers seat), PDM (passenger door) , PSM (passenger seat), RCM (restraint control), CCM (climate control), ADS (adaptive damping system), KTM (key transponder) and SLM (security locking). It reads P, B and U error codes. You have to order the Jaguar/ Landrover specific reader.

Ozbot.... Excellent news mate.
I really value that - I didn't want to buy on another manufacturer's false promises.
I think I'm going to go for the CR PRO model which does 'all' makes - because I have cars by 4 different marques in the family.
I got the Aussie seller to check with icarsoft; and they said that the pro version keeps all the features of the individual specific model versions.
I was concerned that it may not work with my early model year and the seller was exaggerating - as happened with the Autel one I got.
Thanks a lot for your help....

I have a. Foxwell NT310 for my 98 XK8 which has the JLR software installed and it happily reads all modules except those on the serial data link such as the Air con module and the Key transponder. However, if you use an OBD breakout box and short out pins for the SDL, they are read just fine. Apparently this is fixed on later cars. Something to be aware of on earlier models.

Feedback on iCarsoft Pro
Ok, I bought this scanner hoping it would do what I need, unfortunately it's 'patchy' in what it will do on MY car -
It will read and clear -
Eng Control
Trans Control
Instrument cluster
ABS module
It will read but NOT clear -
Driver' door
Passenger door and seat
Body control module.
It will NOT read or clear -
Airbags
Driver's seat
Security locking module.
Not sure weather to try to get a refund or not ($420)....

My scanner is a 310 Elite which looks like it's been superceded. I notice that most Foxwell scanners are "all cars" like your existing scanner. There is a 510 Elite on Amazon that is programmed by Foxwell specifically for Landrover/Jaguar, which appears to be identical to mine. Do a search on scanners for Jaguar. My car is a 1997 (MY98) build and with an OBD breakout box, I do believe that I can read all the modules on board. I mentioned in a previous post that the breakout box is needed to read the modules on the serial data link (Key transponder, AC Controller and active suspension module) on older cars but should read them without the box on later models.

Hi,
So I bought the CR Pro, which does lots of makes of cars. I did that because we have cars by 3 other makes in the family as well.
The software for each marque is identical between the Pro (many marques) and single marque models like the LR.
In my early (serial no. just under 3000) car I got the following results -
It will read and clear-
Engine Control
Trans Control
Instrument cluster
ABS module
It will read but NOT clear
Driver's door
Passenger door Passenger seat
Body control module.
It will NOT read OR clear
Airbags/SRS – this is on OBD Pin 3 on these early cars.
Driver's seat
Security locking module. Aircon - Serial data - pins 7 & 15
Regards, John

Hi RedJags,
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but a question from another member has got me thinking about how to use my scanner better, to see more modules.
I have some connectors with loose leads which I can use as a break out box.
But how do I actually do this to access these modules?
i.e which pins on the car do I connect to which on the scanner?
And by short out - do you mean connect these 2 together? on the car or at the scanner? or to ground in either case?
I'd like to access and be able to erase -
Aircon - Serial data - pins 7 & 15
Security locking module, and Body control module - SCP on pins 2 & 10.
Driver's seat
And be able to erase -
Driver's door
Passenger door & SeatThank you for any help.
Regards, John

This set up should give you almost everything you need on our early cars.
