Default Seat motor voltage question

Both of my seat controllers seem to be bad. I have looked over the wiring diagram and see which wires go to which motors, so I'd like to apply voltage to the motors to move the seats around to get to the bolts, etc.

My question is are the motors 12 volt? I know many things that are controlled by solid state controllers use 5 volts, but can't seem to find anything on this. I've done a search and haven't found it here, please forgive me if I have overlooked it.

Thanks in advance to all for you input!

The motors are 12V operated by relays. The feedback pots are the position sensors.

Yep, these seat computers can be a real problem, easy to remove under the front of the seat, two bolts and one wiring harness.

But the cost of a new one is Jag off the charts. I think a grand or more.

I am beginning to think it would be cheaper to find and buy a parts car than attempt to replace broken parts with new dealer items. If you look at the value of a used XK you can buy it again if you have to use the dealer for a parts source.

Great, I was hoping for 12 volt, at least I can position the seats and move them around to get them out. I'm hoping that I can repair the modules, it seems that many people have been able to solder up broken tracks.

All dealer parts are high, not just Jaguar. I needed some coolant hoses for a VW we used to own. It was a moulded set of about half inch hose about nine inches long. VW wanted $90 and I found aftermarket for $15. The friendly neighborhood BMW dealer has caused many a heart attack and my last call to the Jeep dealer ended up as $35 each for 2 inch plastic wheel center caps. I wonder if the manufacturers realize how many sales they miss due to 500% markups (or do they even care)?

This link might help with your electrical problem and questions http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto.../jagxk2001.pdf As for the repair of the seat control module I have a little information that I have not put together for a post. Let me know if you need it.

Great, thanks, nothing beats factory info! I have access to Shopkey and find it to be pretty good, but the factory info often has the little detail stuff that others miss.

One thing you can do if you need to put a seat in a better position is to swap the seat computer from either the drivers side or passenger side to put the seat in the correct position and then swap back to the drivers seat. A temporary fix until you can fix a seat computer or wiring problem.

I had to do that on my passenger seat since it will move rearward but not back forward. The computer had coffee get into the mix and its toast. I think the dealer wanted $800 just for the part.

I wish I could do that, but both of mine are toast. My hope is to get the passenger seat out of the 'gangsta-lean" position and remove it's module to fix it, then pop it into the drivers seat, after I remove the drivers seat module , I'll and fix it and pop it into the pasenger so hopefully we'll get 2 funtioning seats.

Sometimes you can find the controllers on EBay for a resonable price.

Also there is a member on this forum that works on these controlers and can do the jumper wire thingy to fix breaks in the circuit boards. Dont remember who that is but maybe you can track him down with a search. Or a post asking for assistance.

Good news, the right module only had one bad track so I've repaired it, put it back in and adjusted the seat, then put it in the left seat. Bad news, the left module has a number of bad tracks and teh seat back recline motor or drive is not working, just a buzz. Oh well, at least I got onemodule to work so far and I can move the seat to get it out. Thanks for everyones help and suggestions.

The p90x workout schedule is an incredibly popular home-based, boot camp-style video exercise program that some fitness fanatics swear by. But does it do the job? A study of the system finds it does improve cardio respiratory function.

I'm trying a conductive ink pen from radio Shack on the other module, I'll post my results once I see how it goes.

I'm happy to report that after hours of careful taping, cutting with a fresh xacto and lots of trial an error, my other control module lives! Caig labs "circuit writer", $20 from Radio Shack is a pen with conductive ink used to repair and make circuit boards. Now the question is how long it will hold up for... I think this is a viable option instead of soldering bits of wire in. Some of my breaks were so close to the chip, I was afraid to use the soldering iron.

Nice work!

I would suggest some clear epoxy (test it first to make sure it does not make the conductive paint run) over the repairs, particularly at the edge of the board, where the case abrades the traces and causes some of the problems in the first place.

I was thinking about that. Caig makes a cover solution, but Radio Shack doesn't sell it, so I'd have to search. I was even thinking about raiding my girlfriends clear nail polish. I put a dab of RTV silicone on the "ledge" of the corners of the cover to try and space the board away, it does not appear there are any tracks that it could harm at the corners of the board. I also put a layer of friction tape over the edge of the board on the other side. Now on to the switch troubles on the right seat and motor troubles on the left.

Yes, by applying power to the motors I was able to get the seats in a decent position to ride in and get the modules out. The conductive ink pen from Radio Shack made fixing the modules pretty easy; I hate soldering anything with IC's or transistors, I've burnt up plenty over the years.
