Security on the gear shifter

Security on the gear shifter
I need help.
When I brought my 1998 XK* I was told there is a security system built into the gear shifter. You tap it to the left 2 times and them start the car.
I think I am having trouble with this. Sometimes the car will not start. My question and what I need help with.
Can i disable this security system?

Either that or
The linkage was broken and the guy selling you the car tried to turn it into a feature. The only security on the shifter is the interlock and that should disengage when the ignition is on and the car sees the transponder in the key. You can insert the key into the little hole with the screw cover next to the shifter to bypass it if it isn't functioning (I relearned this when some nimrod moved the relays around in the trunk and it wouldn't unlatch).

An interesting procedure.
The security system in the gearshift is the Interlock Solenoid which requires your foot on the brake pedal to release before the gearshift can be moved out of 'P'. You should be able to hear a soft click as this happens.
It sounds to me like a faulty (possibly sticking) Interlock Solenoid and the PO has found this as a workaround to avoid a proper fix.
