Hey Joy--I had a chance to look at the vin numbers in 3 locations. One on the dash, another a sticker on the body inside the door sill near the latch, and the one in the trunk above the battery. In my case, ALL, of the vin numbers match completely (every digit/letter).
I am not sure what it indicates in your case that some of the letters/numbers are different--maybe nothing.

I agree, if the last six digits match everything is from the same original vehicle. I would not be surprised if Jag had some coding irregularities on the other digits in the early models.
Don't sweat it.

My older Jgs (80s vintage) had two VINS.
The first, the one the car was born with, so to speak, was plainly stamped onto a flat panel on the cowl.
However,a second VIN....one meeting *North American* VIN requirements...was used on the windshield pillar, door jamb, and on other stickers. The last six digits matched on all of them but the alpha parts were slightly different.
I thought Jaguar had stopped this "two VIN" practice...but perhaps not?
I dunno. Just a thought.
Cheers

PS- I've seen the "two VIN" thing on some Ferraris as well ...and there might be others...so the practice isn't entirely unheard of.

Maybe as Doug says there was a 2 vin setup in the US, would sound more plausible.
The only tracable vin number you gave is the one in the Boot, at least that one corresponds to the jaguar database on IDS. The other one I can't decipher.
Also, you have a XK8, besides of course the year, the letter D on position 8 "Normaly Aspirated 4.0L engine" also gives it away ;-)
Here is some extra info from the IDS database regarding options:
Cruise control
No Traction control
No Adaptive Damping
No Heated Frontscreen
No Fold Back Mirrors
Electrochromatic mirrors
Drivers memory seat
No sunroof

No, just have IDS software installed on a computer. You can buy it on eBay, a friendly download from a dealer, etc. To actually tie it into a car requires a VCM, it's the expensive part. Chinese clones available but highly NOT recommended.
