Serpentine belt related grinding noise.
#41
Hi I've been back and forth across the country a couple of times recently so have only just got to do some Jag work.
I switched out the A/C Pulley bearing for a new one and have gotten rid of one of this noises so that's good!
But my low rumble vibration is still there... I tried to find some play in the crank pulley but couldn't move it....
Your ribless belt might be on the agenda soon. And come to think about it, why not just run the car with that cut down belt :-)
But I'm wondering about this, an EGR pipe leak? https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...k-noise-54713/

I dont think that thread is on your (and my) grinding noise . It is talking piston slap which sounds like bad tappets and the engine would use oil ..mine does not smoke or use oil.
If I remember right you said you could move the torque converter but you cannot move the crankshaft. If that is the case it looks like a torque converter problem but remember the torque converter is mounted on a flexible plate ..you dont have a flywheel.
Its too cold here to do anything but I think the belt bias did cause a relief in the noise but examination shows the belt has moved back ( jumped a groove) so perhaps not worth the effort unless you got a spare belt.
Since i over filled the oil by 1 litre (quart) the clicking noises but not the grind have gone. ( On the old cars the dipstick was marked lower than later cars by about 1/2 inch) but only time will tell.
When it warms up I will run it on the ramps ( my ramps have hydraulic rams at the end to lift the car up another 4 inches) and look at the torque converter for marks .
I have not been able to get the plug out the transmission to check the levels and only have a reference in the paperwork to "change fluids"
Good luck and remember only spend the minimum on old cars they could be scrap next week.
