Shock absorber confusion

Shock absorber confusion
Hi,
The previous owner fitted Gas-a-Just rear shock absorbers to my XK8, and I have to say they are VERY hard. My mechanic said they were nothing like an XK8 should ride (even for 19" wheels) and were tight enough for track-days!
I didn't notice on the original test-drive as I took it down a smooth flat fast road. Our roads in south-east England are terrible so it's starting to wear me down a bit.
My question is about replacement. I'm not really clued up about shocks but all I want is a nice smooth Jaguar type ride - I'm not really into racing.
Unfortunately there's just such a confusing range and pricing.
The Jaguar originals (£190/$300) seem the most expensive with 'own brand' OEMs (with the same part number) coming second.
One of the cheapest seems to be Bilstein at £80 ($130) - could be a special offer though.
What are the perils of the cheaper shocks - is it false economy and/or do they give a rougher ride?
Many thanks.

Cheaper than the dealer is not false economy. They will be higher on most items.
Bilstein's are a very respected brand and recommended by many on the forum. I have a new front pair in my garage waiting on shock mounts to come in.
I think the OEM (Jag) Bilstein's were the "comfort" level. They are much smoother, although you will get some body roll in hard cornering. The main thing, regardless of brand, is to get the heavy-duty shocks or you will be wasting your money.
