Small Mufflers
Hi everyone,
I know in advance that there is a lot of write ups on mufflers. I have removed the large center one and only got a tiny bit of sound. I went back to muffler shop to have the two small rear ones before the axel removed. He talked me out of it. He said if they are straight through design then removal wouldn't make it too loud but that if they are baffled with S plates then it would make too much sound and I would get a drone in the car especially with a convertible. Anybody know what inside is like? I would like a little bit more sound but without the drone.
Thanks,
Mike

Best Path
I did a lot of experimentation before I bought the MacLeod system I have now. The best bang for the buck is to put in the real muffler delete kit that Mina Gallery and a few others sell. Removing the center muffler and replacing it with an X-Pipe and removing the center resonators did ugly things and eventually I had to replace the last with new ones. Had I just stopped with the rear muffler deletes I would have been $3K to $4K ahead and while I do like my MacLeod system a lot (it sounds wonderful) it is far from cheap. I will say that a lot of folks (mostly kids) thought my car sounded wonderful with the x-pipe and the rear muffler delete but I thought it would wake the dead and when I put in the Nameless Cats I'm pretty sure I showed up one the Richter scale.

I removed only the rear mufflers, maybe they technically are resonators, and the sound was much louder, beautiful sound. Great rumble. However, too much drone at 50-60 mph, don't recall the actual rpm of the drone though. So went back and they put in a 16 inch magnaflow glass packs. Drone is gone, sound is nice, but after a while now I think just a bit too quiet. I am thinking up an x pipe now, maybe that is the key.

It's amazing how many routes we take. The center muffler was already removed when I got my XK8 and had an "H" crossover. I deleted the rear mufflers and got way too much drone at 2000 RPM. I went back and went to an "X" crossover with with a 20" glasspack on each bank. I geat a nice rumble at idle and the cat roars from 3500 RPM up. I'm happy and I invested about $300.

As most folks did, I removed the front and installed an "H" in its place, not much effect at all. I then removed the rear mufflers and substituted straight pipes, really cool for about half an hour before the drone got to me. I finally got a pair of short "Turbo tubes" from Summit and welded on Monza double tips at the end and it sounds good now. Quiet with no or little load and a nice roar under load.

I know what you guys are after, the sound can only be accomplished using very large stainless steel/chrome exhaust tips( ie 2 1/4 in 4-6" out, and make them long as possible.
You get that cannon exhaust note, with no drone, no raspy can, just smooth deep thrush sound/throaty/smooth sound that you like.
Those tiny tips, dual or single never cut it.

On the XK8 I removed the center and put in a H pipe and it sounds decent, but nothing close to my XKR. It does have a little drone. My XKR doesn't.
