Default Smoke

To you greats that make this site,

question:
my XKRFACE (05 XKR with 75K) puffs a bit of smoke out the exhaust on cold start up or even in a single day if she has had time to cool off.
goes away with the warm up...I think...and I don’t believe I am consuming oil...(a fresh oil change 50 miles ago with royal purple and a monitoring started).
if it was a small block Chevy we would be thinking valve guide seals...this being an overhead cam set up...I don’t know what to think.

thank you for any help/ input,

max

What you're seeing is most likely condensation from the exhaust. Monitor oil consumption and eliminate any oil leaks then report back.

NBCat,

thx for the response...I should have mentioned, it is gray smoke..I don’t think it is rings because it goes away...are there valve seals of some kind on these engines ?
i have only had this cat for less than 1K miles and do not know anything about it’s previous servicing, type or frequency of oil changes

thank you,

max

I guess my question is: How much is a bit of smoke? Are we talking about a small cloud of smoke or just a little bit of smoke.....and how much Oil is it using?
After my 2003 XKR was broad-sided and Totaled, I bought this 2005 XKR with 48,000 miles on it and had this smoking problem. Every time I started the Engine I would get a good size Cloud of white/blue smoke and it used a quart of oil every 150 miles.....Every body said "Rings" so We rebuilt the Engine along with Porting and Ceramic Coating the Combustion Chambers and some other things. When we started the Engine it was still Smoking....Just like before!
The problem was the Filter Material up in the Cam Covers was completely saturated with Oil Gunk! It couldn't breath!! Replaced the Cam Covers and that stopped the Smoking problem.
The previous Owner had not changed the Oil in 40,000 miles and the entire Engine was full of Gunk. Today, with about 50,000 miles on the rebuild, it will only use about 1/2 Quart every 5,000 miles.
I don't know if this is your problem as I don't know how many miles you have on the Clock, but this was a complete surprise to me....I've noticed that older Jaguar V8's tend to smoke somewhat at start-up and have wondered if the Filters are Gunking-up like mine did/

Hope your problem is not as costly as mine was!

Default Cam cover filter

+1 to BCP

The PCV system has a filter built into the cam covers. Easy enough to remove the covers, check out inside and clean the wire gauze. Old oil will tend to clog it and mine was dirty too. Be gentle removing the metal screen as the fixings are fragile.

Billy, And that is why we ask so many questions here even if it seems redundant to some. If someone suggested that to you it would have saved a lot of heart ache and money. I enjoy reading the solutions to all these problems. TM

Yes there are valve seals, and they could be hardened. This is not a common problem, but I have seen it on the forum.

Great explanation Billy Clyde! I have a 2000 XK8 with almost the same exact problem which has been driving me crazy (albeit a short drive) since I bought the car 5 years ago. Very embarrassing to start up the car with the accompanying cloud of smoke. Chipped an exhaust valve and had a complete valve job done including new valve seals with no success. This might be the answer. Will definitely check it out.

max224,

You are correct, it was very embarrassing....People thought it was an old Junker, little Kids would point at it...It being a large Cloud of Blue, Green and White Smoke....This occurred every time I started it up and if I was driving at a steady speed down the Road and got on it to pass someone, it would do the same thing! You could hardly see the car you just passed! People at the Office called the Coupe "Old Smokey"! I was desperate....So, I decided to rebuild it...but I didn't want to just rebuild it, I wanted more! So, we spent a month working over the Engine....Ported the intakes from the T/B thru to the Exhaust outlets and then had the Combustion Chambers and Piston Tops Ceramic coated...Then did the Big Pulley/Small Pulley trick to the S/C and changed the Intercooler Radiator to the large one and put on the Big Water Pump....Then finished it off with the Snow Methanol/Water Injector!
Then I decided to replace, rather than clean the Cam Cover Filters...I just wanted to make sure that after all I had done that the problem was solved...The Engine is running great after 50,000 miles and I only had one major problem and had to replace the ECU....Of course it's a Jaguar, so I've had the normal problems that we all have Fuel Pump and some other things.. Wouldn't be a Jaguar without some tender loving care!

gents,

MANY thanks to you all for this valuable bit of knowledge & experience ! I will be pulling the covers off in short order however it is settling (can sleep now) to have a direction to go and not as concerned about a more serious issue.
