Default Sport shift inoperative

The sport shift mode in my 01 XKR does not operate. The red light in the switch does not illuminate. I have subsituted the switch from my VDP but it made no difference. Can anyone help me? Thank you.

Unfortunately I can't help but i've got a similar problem. Mine is stuck in sport mode due to a bad switch. I haven't been able to find a replacement yet or spent much time looking as I drive it in sport mode all the time anyways.

Do the lights in the gear selector light up? They are on the same fuse as the Sport mode switch. (Drivers side #16 5A)
Are you sure the VDP and the XK switches are the same? There is more there than a switch and a LED. Four resistors and a transistor, according to the wiring diagram, I have never been in there.

Those switches are delicate, I dropped something like my phone on the switch and it broke the tabs inside that allowed it to lock into 'normal' mode (depressed position). Had to replace at the dealer -> $150. Fell your pain v-head!

Sounds exactly like what happened to my switch. I never cared enough to price one out but if a replacement is $150 mine's going to be "sporting" 100% of the time. It shifts better that way anyhow.

I'd love to have a word with the marketing people responsible for putting that feature in the car.....

Default Checked

My gear indicator lights do work. The green illumination light in the switch works. I assumed the VDP switch was the same as it plugged right in, they usually won't if different, however I haven't checked the catalogue. My switch retaining clips were also broken and the switch loose when I got the car. The sport shift didn't work from the start. Thanks for your help, any more?

Yes, there is more help available. I hope the problem is in the connector (Black-10 pos.)
It was the last time I helped someone with a similar problem.

Wiring diagrams are available on this site, or send me a PM with your Email Addr. and I will
send you one. It is a PDF.

If you can use a voltmeter, here is what you should see:
FC35
1 Ground
2 10v in sport mode, Ground in normal

5 12v for green light

7 Ground in sport mode, (turns red led on)
8 12v source
9 Ground in sport mode, 9v in normal.

Pierce the wire if you cannot get in the back of the connector.

To get into Sport mode:
Pin 9 puts a ground on a pin in the transmission control module
Pin 2 puts 10v to a pin in the TCM

The result of which is:
TCM grounds Pin 7 turning on the LED.

The pins I left out are either vacant or used for the "S" light and dimmer control.

Do you use the Jag much in the winter in Montana??
I spent 5 years in Bozeman at MSC (now MSU)
I could start my 120 at -40 degrees (just couldn't move the gearshift for a while)

Thanks for the reply and help. I got the diagrams from my JTIS. I don't know what the #10 6ground plug is. Here are my test results. I did them using both the XKR sw. and my known good switch from my VDP. #1- black and pink-- ground, #2 red & green- 10.8V in sport, grd in normal, #7 red & blue-Grd in both sport and norm, #8- white & red-batt voltage, #9- Red & blue--grd in norm--nothing in sport. Tests Were identical with both sws. Any help? Thanks again.

The switches are NOT THE SAME. They have different part numbers and the gearboxes are different 2000MY to 2002MY. I went through this years ago trying to diagnose this very fault on a 2001MY XKR. Someone substituted a Normally Aspirated gearbox Mode switch to the XKR and did not know this and didn't mention it (apparenty they could not fix it so it came to the dealer). After an hour of continuity tests and power/ground tests, reading the electrical guide etc. I realized the switch was wrong. I replaced it and everything operated normally!! YOU CANNOT substitute W5A580 and ZF5HP24 gearbox Mode switches.
