Squeaky, broken cup holder

1999 XK8 Convertible
So, I know that some replacement fixes are required, but when it comes to that broken, squeaky, cockeyed sitting, unusable cup holder, I'm not going to shell out monster bucks for a new one ($200.00 in my neck-o-the woods).
My cup holder, like billions of others, had one broken pivot point/hinge. Yesterday I got tired of the squeaking, tired of it popping open half way, tired of it not wanting to close and STAY closed. So I took care of it.
I took the console top off, disassembled it and took a look at what I could do. Turns out that since that one pivot point had failed, all heck and high water had broke loose inside there. There are two springs, one for each side that push the cup holder open when the button is pressed. One side was working, but the failed side was all out of whack. That broken pivot point would not allow the cup holder to stay closed because of the spring.
The solution? I took both springs out and put it back together, simple as that. Now, there's no squeaking, no rattling and no surprise cup holder ejections. Now I can actually USE the cup holder.
Ahhhhhhhh.....

I had the same problem with mine, and I fixed it this way, keeping the springs. I had both pins left on my cup holder, but the right side cup, where the pin fit in was missing the bottom. I removed the cup holder assembly, and I cleaned both surfaces(the pin, and cup) with plastic safe electrical electrical cleaner, and assembled them. I then put a tiny tiny drop of oil on the pin. I mixed up a dab of plastic weld, and smeared it all over where the bottom of the cup was, that the pin fit into. I let it dry overnight, and assembled the armrest. The oil kept the epoxy from sticking to the pin, and the rest of the piece is super solid.....Just an idea for someone else in the future.....Mike
