stabillity control fail/traction control fail
Hi everybody, I have this continuing problem and it is begining to get to me, the car goes into stabillity control fail/traction control fail, limp home mode. I switch off for 5mins switch back on and everything is perfect till the next time, I have taken all the speed sensors off and cleaned them but it doesn't seem to help, I bought a scanner....Autel maxiscan ms509 and the only code it brought up was P1111, also gave me a message something about throttle volume open circuit, cant seem to get that one back for some reason, I took the car out yesterday and to my dismay I seem to have a gearbox problem it seems to miss some gears, are the problems related?, I feel I have a major expense heading my way, any help would be good, many thanks John.

Hi,
It's a complete guessing game w/o the codes. It is probably going to be a chassis code. For example, could be a failing BPM, or an intermittent sensor failure. Could also be an intermittent harness failure.
You need to get codes read as a typical commercial scan tool is only going to pick up basic P codes.
P1111 is not a Jaguar fault code. A generic scan tool with a built in generic P code table is going to give you false info for P1xxx codes on a Jaguar. The transmission will park in one gear while in restricted performance, so that might be the only relationship to the SC/TC; or, you could be experiencing a transmission problem independent of the other problems.
Did you disconnect the battery, by any chance? I know it's a popular recommendation but doing that will erase the display of the codes causing the fault, but does nothing to repair the fault. The display is kept in volatile memory so a loss in battery power will clear the codes display leaving you w/o info to direct you to the fault. If you didn't disconnect the battery, then probably just codes you cannot see with your scan tool.

Sounds to me like you have two different problems. TRAC/STAB fault doesn't cause a limp home mode, it simply disables abs brakes and traction comtrol system. I know because I currently get that fault and man is it annoying. If you search the threads for ABS faults you'll find some links for rebuilt units at a much cheaper cost than $2500.00 for a new one if thats causing the TRAC/STAB. I think they were around $300.00. There is also a link on how to repair the unit yourself if your inclined to do so and have the ability.
You may want to pay a jaguar dealer to let you know what is actually wrong with car. Have them do the diagnostics. Or invest in the AE software to pull all the codes. It's like $500.00 for the ability to read all OEM Jaguar codes. It's $250 for the unit which reads all the standard codes and another $229.00 to read jaguar specific codes for ABS and other systems. Do some more research using the forum search tools and I think you'll find alot of helpful information.
Good Luck

I concur with Dpez, sounds like two different issues, I'd focus on the gear slipping and shifting first, that's a biggie. Look thru the transmission FAQ items in the sticky atop the XK8/R section, you may gain some insight.
Steve (the tree tech) is also correct about the scanners, the basic ones will not read the ABS system codes, only generic engine and transmission ones. I'd try another one to see ifyou can pull a transmission one...it may help diagnose that 2nd little issue you are having...or not. Sorry can't be of more help.

Good call john, if the transmission is the beginning of any a-drum, or b-drum failure, you'll be glad you did the legwork now, instead of later.
We've got some links in the FAQ sticky if you want to be informed on the transmission issues it 'could' be. Always wish you luck from all of us.
