Have you tried a shot of starting fluid in to the intake pipe to see if the engine will run for a few seconds longer ?

I have to update everyone who has taken the time to try and help me with this problem for ongoing a year now.
The last big step has come from bringing a fellow to the house with the diagnostic equipment for the keys and that protection system. His diagnostics said that the keys and the KPM where all functioning correctly. His scanner however came up with some error codes that I had never seen before and these all led back to the ECM. searching through the cause of theses codes I came across a Jaguar Service Administration Bulletin 1-186 which outlines the steps for programming a new ECM. If you recall from the past Jaguar had said they needed my old ECU back to download the software off of it and reload it to the new one. To me this seemed like downloading the software from a non-functioning computer and loading it to a new one. I mentioned that to them at the time, but they said that was how it was done.
The Service Bulletin says that the programming of the VID block and all other modules from when the car was built should be downloaded from Jaguar from what they call the WDS Configuration Process.
I went to the Service Manager with this information bypassing the service advisor. The SA called me back a few hours later after speaking to the shop foremen and said if I would get the car back to them, they would put an hours' time into it as there seemed to be some miscommunication.
They called me back and said that they had made some progress with a fellow who came down from Toronto who used to train the technicians 20 years ago and they were making some progress but of course wanted me to authorize some additional 2 hours. I said yes.
Last update yesterday, they have it running without the stop after 2 seconds, it keeps running although a little rough, which maybe to gas that has been sitting in it for a year.
The problem now is that there is no response from the throttle pedal, so they are figuring it is the throttle body. Being this far in and the first progress that has been made I authorized a new throttle body and installation which will come to around $900.00. The part will arrive Monday morning and be installed.
Again, thanks to everyone who put energy into this problem, and if I could just ask everyone to cross their finger until Monday.

An update to the car which has now been sitting at Jaguar for 2 more months.
The throttle body was changed, and they have got it responding to the throttle but running rough and is in limp mode. Of course, they asked me for more hours to keep going on it. I have not heard anything back for 2 weeks.
I have come to the conclusion that using the downloaded program from the original defective ECM into the new one introduced software issues.
As their technician and service manager were unaware of 1-186 their own procedure for installing the factory software Jaguar I am going to insist that they get another new module and start over with a proper software installation. If I don't do it soon, they will probably tell me that the module is out of warranty.
I have been very patient and understanding but something tells me that they did not tell the factory techs they say they are working with that the customer had to come in and bring them a printout of their own procedure.
I am going to be into this for over $10,000 when it should have been a new module installed and programmed which should have cost about $3000.00
My next move if they are uncooperative with this is to call Jaguar Canada and start in with the customer service area telling them that their dealership did not bother to look up their own procedure to install a new ECM.

Why wait to report these clowns to Jaguar Canada? Do so immediately -- you have nothing to lose....

This saga has come to an end, I went into Jag today the service manager said, I was just going to call you, your cars is fixed. I was so ready to end up in a shouting match and I was just so overjoyed I couldn't believe it.
He said that at the direction of Jag England they just followed all of the bus routes and cleaned and checked every connection and it finally worked, they are putting it down to the age of the car and corrosion. I don't know but I am so thrilled that I will just be happy to have it.

I could have taken it today but because it has been sitting there so long, they wanted to detail it, shampoo the carpets and give it a polishing. I have waited this long I can wait another couple of days.

Financially it makes no sense to be elated, and I am not a rich man but this car is more than just transportation to me so that is what it is. Maybe I can still leave it to my Grandson.
Signing off on this one

That's great news!

Is there a way (I think that if you ask the dealer to supply relevant info) the dealer could supply info on these "bus routes" for the benefit of the forum? I think if you explained that there are a bunch of Jag enthusiasts that it would HELP they might be willing...? I am sure that they don't know exactly what they DID. I've been in that situation more times than I would like to admit.

I'm going to be "that guy"... I really had a feeling that it had to do with corrosion, circuitry and electrical connection from the outset. Jus say'n.

I hope things stay FIXED!

Beware of bullshit coming from jaguar dealers ...saying its old age and bad connections absolves them of responsibility

I spent the worst employment year of my life as a service advisor at a Ford dealership, and I can recognize crap when I hear it.

I to believe it's bullshit to but until I pick the car at 2:00 this afternoon I will remain pleasant.
I still believe that when they told me that they could not repair it without the old, damaged module to download the software from to put into the new module that they programmed some bad code into it.
Even though I told the service advisor that they should be getting the original code from Jaguar, and it seemed to me that that was like downloading virus lain software from a n old computer and loading into a new one.
That is the point where it started run for 2 seconds and shut off. It would also quit doing that after 7 tries but could be returned back to that state with a hard reset which tells me it was software related.
If I had not found the codes in it myself when I had the key fobs checked which led me to find the Jaguar advisory I-186 reinstalling a new ECM and given it to them I think I would still not have the car.

I will be pleasant and thankful today, but I intend to relay the information to Jaguar Canada and that I believe that I have put about $6000 more than I should have if their technician had been aware of the prescribed procedure for installing the new ECM.

Default Starts and shuts down in 2 seconds - Resolved

This was a yearlong trip to the final resolution of this problem and so many people contributed solutions so I will try to provide a step by step of this journey.
The car is a 2004 XK8 Convertible which I have lovingly maintained for the last 9 years.

The problem started one year ago September; I came home from a nice 400-mile drive and put the car away in the garage and she was running wonderfully. The next morning, we were intending to go to Niagara Falls and when I went to start the car it coughed and spit and made awful noises backfiring and sounding like something was very bad. I quickly took a code reading and got a code that showed the ECM was the problem, The memory in it had gone away. We just got in the Jeep and went to Niagara Falls.
Searching on this forum I founds it was not uncommon for the capacitors to leak in these older cars and lose the memory in the module.
I sent the module to ECM repair in Jacksonville FL. they told me that my diagnosis was correct, but they could not repair it.
I got online and was lucky to find a module from a car that was identical to mine that had just been in a wreck. $400.
I put the replacement module in but it would not work and even though I had the Jaguar SSD software I could not program the replacement module.
I sent it to my local JLR dealer, but they said they could not program a used module and I would have to get a new one, have it installed and reprogrammed. $4200.00
The JLR dealer called me and asked me for my defective module saying they needed to download the software from it to load into the new module. I had it returned from Florida and took it to them.
At the time I told the Service Advisor that I thought they were supposed to download the original software from Jaguar, but he dutifully ignored me. I told him that seemed like downloading software from your defective compute to get your new one running.
I took about a month and then JLR called me and told me that it has started the; runs and shuts down in 2 seconds thing that started me asking for more help here.
At this point I Have a bill for $4200 and the car ids not running, and they want an unlimited budget to stand around and scratch their chins, I brought the car home on a float.
This is when all of the great people here started contributing thoughts.
I sent the car to Toronto to Berkshire Automotive, a Jaguar specialist with a payment of $2000 before they would even look at it, they could not solve it so I brought it home with a $700 tow bill.
One error code that showed up with the SSD software was the KPM, Key Processor Module so I had a fellow who reprograms keys come to the house and put his tools on to check the keys and module and they showed to be okay, but he did get an error code that had never showed up before, at least not for me.
I took a screen shot of the error codes on his equipment and searching those they had to do with the ECM and led me to I-186, the Jaguar Administrative Bulletin, Using WDS to Program / Configure Control Modules.
There is periods of activity in here trying numerous things that many people on this forum had suggested.
About 2 months ago I took the Administrative Bulletin and the error codes that I had found to the J LR dealer and asked the parts guy who I have become friends with to introduce me to the Service manager as I did not want to deal with the service advisor who would not listen.
I told the service manager the history and tried to get him to take the I-186 Service Bulletin, but he looked up my cars VIN number and said it does not show as applying to my car in the list of recalls and would not take it or the error codes I had gotten.
He acted surprised that I had taken the car home previously unrepaired and said if I brought it back, he would put a few hours into it again as they had time. I did not push as I wanted to be understanding and cooperative, but they were not making any progress.
Fortunately, the Service Manager went on vacation, and I was handed off to another service manager to whom I retold the story and he was much more interested. He took the I-186 bulletin and my error code sheet which I had printed, and all neatly bound and gave them to the tech. At this point they tell me they are in touch with Jaguar factory techs in England and working with them. This went on back and forth for a couple of weeks and they called to say that the car was running but idling rough and was not responding to the throttle, so they recommended a new throttle body. $1600, I am in this far what can I do.
With the new throttle body they said it was ruining better but showed the Limp Mode warning. They kept telling me that at the advice of the factory techs they where unplugging and plugging in various modules and they asked me for more money upping the last bill for the throttle body to $2500.00.
2 weeks ago, I was ready to go in a throw a tantrum and tell them that I believed that they screwed up the new module by uploading software from the defective module and that that is the root of all the problems. I wanted to know why I the customer had to take in a printed copy of their own service bulletin and error codes before they started to make progress. That very morning, I went in and the service manager said I was just going to call you; the car is running. It has been here quite a while so we would like to detail and polish it for you.
The invoice has all kinds of detail on it about what they did as far as wiggling connectors and diagnostic's designed to confuse.
The car is running great, but I am convinced that their tech did not know how to install and program a new ECM, and this was the start of all the problems. I believe I am into this for $6000 more than I would have been if they had checked their own service bulletins.
I just keep telling myself I am like wone of those people who I cannot understand spending ridiculous amounts of money on a sick cat.
I am debating whether to take this story to Jaguar Canada customer service complaints, but then I risk being blackballed by the only dealer in my area if I do.

I sent the

^^ Reason No. 1,289 to never darken the door of a Jaguar dealership with these XK8s / XKRs. They simply are not equipped / trained / staffed to work on these aged cars any longer and even worse than that, they do not give a rat's *** about us....

Glad you think you finally got the issues resolved. Hopefully your wallet will have a long stretch of time to heal now. Keep us posted as you spend more time behind the wheel....

'Wiggling connectors and diagnostics' is plausible, but sound very much like a cover story for the litany of errors they have made. Your car, your call, but I'd be on their case. You appear to be out at least $2500 for the throttle body you almost certainly didn't need.

I'm really glad it finally all came together for you:- it is a beautiful car. Enjoy, and don't try to rationalise spending the money. You'll inevitably fail

Hi daro31,

I have merged your new thread with your original one so all posts related to this topic are together. I've been following your saga with great interest and am very happy that your car will run again.

I agree with others that the dealership's explanation is dubious. It would certainly be worth pressuring them to refund part of their substantial charges, and it will probably help if you can put together a concise summary of their missteps and unnecessary parts expenses.

Cheers,

Don

Assuming you still have the original, you now have a spare to keep in your box of spares. As for complaining to Jaguar customer service, the dealer got your 20 year old car running again and even at $6,000+, you have only spent 10% of the price the original owner paid for the car - an absolute bargain.

Lol. His car cost $105,000 (Canadian) when it was new. I think the original owner has more to complain about when it comes to how much money they have lost by making the mistake of visiting a Jaguar dealer.
