Stripes on a coupe?
Hey guys,
I've got the opportunity to lay down some beautiful sripes down the coupe and I's like to see how stripes look on these cars.
So far I've only found photos of the stirling moss edition and I do not like it at all...
I am thinking something like a balboni stripe offset to the drivers side of the car. (I put a photo for example underneath)
I think it would come out very nice, using a very white grey metallic with very subtle flakes (limco or some other cheap basecoat should give that effect) with a very distinguished gold running along side with massive flakes ( I think ppg has a line of very powerful special metallics)
However this is a huge amount of work to do seeing that I will have to re-clear the entire roof and both quarter panels.
So I'd hate for it to look like ****.
Have any of you experimented with stripes before?
Or maybe have some photos to share?
I haven't found anything online.

That doesn't look too bad. I like how they used the hood bulge to set a track for the stripe.
I definitely like the silver tracer.
I spent an hour or so masking out different stripes and I just didn't like the way it was coming together.
I guess these cars are just too curvy for any type to straight line stripe to work.
I do lots of stripes on mustangs and it fits the car perfectly.
I think stripes only work on cars with harder lines.
Thanks for the pics!
Anyways I already laid down the base, I'll be going back to clear.
My front bumper fell off the stand.....

Tony, that Jag emblem on the nose looks great! Not sure if the stripe would look better extended out to the end of the nose, similar to the treatment on the back. But regardless, nice job as always. How did you end up in such a car guy's dream job? Pitiful, stripes could look good, your idea sounds good.

The car is actually silver and the original nose cone did have the stripes as did the rear bumper, but I changed the front for the X150 style, the rear is the Verendum with a carbon wrapped diffuser then I painted them black rather than wrap.
The whole car will be resprayed white, my wife has come quite fond of the stripes and they will be replaced with black viper stripes or something similar, I have come to like them too
I have a few plans for that XK
I forgot to mention the old Skool jag logo with the wings..... Very Aston like which I may keep or have the words replaced with PARAGON rather than Jaguar, I have also fitted my own badge on the grille which I might lose if I go for the wings

Well I'm all done, came out pretty well. I'll need to do a bit of color sanding to get some dust and one little run out.
Now just the drivers door, both quarters and the roof left to go.
The more I look at that stripe the more I think it would look very nice.
I could always spray some stripes over and just live with the rough edge so I don't have to re-clear the whole damn thing haha

I hope you keep us posted with your xj mods!
I love seems these modification posts people put up.
It's starting to get dark over here, Ill take better photos in the sun tomorrow.
Painting outside I never expect great results.
Please be gentle this is only my second time using this AG-40 clear and I'm still getting a feel for it.
It's a very high solids clear that has almost no tolerance between orange peel and running like hell!
But it is a beautiful clear, when it's polished you get a very deep shine and it brings out the best of the metallic flakes.

Everything has gone wrong....
I just set the car out in the sun and.....
The base I used did not blend well with the original metallic so the hood came out very blotchy, and worst of all I missed one spot that I touched up with spot putty so there are two red spots on the left side of the hood.
I guess this is what I get for painting without sufficient light, I should have known better.
I will post some pictures of the disaster later to share my misfortune.

Got that right! Thanks Jag#4
In all honesty I was very lazy when I sprayed my car.
I knew I should have re-based the whole hood and blended out the fenders onto the door.
I will be able to blend the color onto the drivers door and quarter when I fix the dings then when I do the roof i'll do a blend on the a pillar.
The blotchy effect is not too bad and may go unnoticed by most. I wasn't able to get a photo of it.
I am most upset with that damn red spot. A very stupid mistake. =/
I have a strong feeling it is going to stay that way for a long time, seeing that it has taken me so long to finally get down to doing it haha

One step forward and two steps back.
I lent the jag to my brother and he thanked me by running it into a tree.
He didn't get hurt, from the accident at least.
Looks like I'll be painting again soon.
In the pictures I had already pulled it out by hand and hammered a little. The damage really isn't so bad, if anything it gave me a reason to buy clear marker lamps.
On the bright side this is a true testament as to how tough the AG-40 Autoglas clearcoat from matrix is.
The scratches didn't even penetrate the clear!
I'm going to try and hammer the dings out with a plastic hammer and a 2"x 4" hopefully I won't have to re-spray.
I'll get to that next week as I am very busy this weekend.
* The scratch under the drivers headlight is thanks to the loving and caring people of wal-mart.....

What's up with plates in the UK, you guys get to make your own and just register them?

When doing stripes on my FFR Cobra replica, it was standard practice to vary the stripe width from start to end to get them to look correct. If you kept them the same width from the base of the windshield to the front of the car they looked off due to all the curves of the body. I am guessing that you would have to do something similar with the XK8.

That is exactly what I do.
I used to measure stripes when I started and it always ended up looking a bit off.
The best way I have found is doing it free-hand, of course I am no veteran pro so It usually takes a second attempt to have the stripe looking correct.
I am going to see a a shop that prints vehicle wraps to get the cost on material for the stripe I want that way if I really don't like it I'll just peel it off and if I love it I'll just clear it on, I've had great success clearing over vinyl stripes to make them more permanent.

CUE8T is actually a 1978 plate, you can only fit plates of your registration year or older, you can not fit a newer plate....
