Angry Stuck in park, lots of warning lights !

Went to start up my XKR this morning. Won't come out of park, engine management light is on, abs light is on, traction control light is on, hand brake light is on, fuel gauge is empty even though i just filled the tank, temp gauge is showing low even after i got it out of park by unscrewing the Torx screw on top of the gearbox and took it for a run. Heater screen showing ER, and the little screen on the dash with messages doesnt work at all. Any help would be appreciated :S but once it gets going it drives as it should !! even with all these problems.

I had similar problems with my 1997 4.0 which I narrowed down to a fault with the CAN (network) which controls many functions in the car.
The good news is that it doesn't stop the car running OK other than the problem getting out of "park". I think I eventually found the problem which was a microswitch in the J Gate (the CAN goes through there) - in mine there were three microswitches with metal operating "tangs" and one of these was broken.
But - before taking the J Gate to bits, do you have 100% confidence in your battery - very often this sort of problem is down to low voltage. Even when there's enough current to operate the starter motor, there may not be sufficient volts to keep all the electrickery happy.

I had the same problem a couple of years ago. I had left the car garaged for about a month, it started right up. I went down the road about 2 miles and the dash lit up like a Chritmas Tree, No oil pressure, overheat, ABS, DSC. The end result was the battery voltage was about 11.6 volts from prolonged electronics drain leaving it unlocked.

I leave it on a Ctek Tender now as it's not a daily driver and have not had any problem since.

If this is all of a sudden... battery. Eliminate the battery possibility before doing anything else. Same thing on my XJ's if not plugged in to a trickle charger does not want to come out of park after sitting even just overnight.

Thanks for the quick responses all of you, I hooked up another battery short term, no change. Left it to charge over night, no change. I took apart the J gate and nothing appears broken, apart from only having 1 switch i could see. Took it to the best garage i know apart from going to a main dealer, their diagnostics couldnt figure it out :/ anymore ideas ? They checked all they could think of and found nothing wrong (

Post #90 is not correct for your car: it is correct for X350's introduced in the UK in late 2003 (4.2L engines).

So, to my mind, your misfires are all on one bank (left bank, 5, 6, 7, 8), classic case of a jumped timing chain.

There is a TSB for a bad solder joint in the instrument cluster that causes the CAN bus to go crazy with the symptoms you have. For the life of me I can't find it now. There is a possibility this could be your problem.

Hello Jack, are you still in this forum? I have a 2000 XKR with very similar problems. Did you get yours repaired? Thanks Jim
