Supercharger whinging sound.
Hi All,
My 1999 XKR (right hand drive) convertible project has hit another snag. after changing the primary & secondary chains, pulleys and tentioners along with a number of other parts the engine is running well but the supercharger is constantly whinging.
I know nothing about them so I'll fire a number of questions at you:
It sounds like bearings, can you just changed these and if so is there a video explaining it?
would I be better off rebuilding/servicing the charger?
Is buying a reconditioned one, cost allowing a better option?
Any advice is really appreciated.

The supercharger has an oil bath bearing in the front and a permanently lubed rear bearing. Th oil should be changed but there is no schedule. I would say at least every 50K miles. The thing in the supercharger that usually makes racket is the coupler in the snout.If you can get to that, you may find your problem.

I should have mentioned that the sound a bad coupler makes is rattling. The coupler is plastic and does wear out. To change it, you remove the snout and just replace it. There are some you tube videos of it. If it is rattling don't let it go too long or you will be rebuilding the supercharger.

I suggest changing the supercharger oil first , if that doesn’t help then you are due for the coupler replacement as suggested.
note: I changed the supercharger oil when I first bought the car. 25,000 miles later I checked it . It looked and smelled used up.
Based on my observations I think a 20,000 mile supercharger oil change interval is prudent.

Hi Guys!
I go to the Ford Dealer about every 25,000 Miles and buy (2) Bottles of Supercharger Oil. They sell it as the Ford Cobra's Supercharger is also an Eaton....Several years ago I bought a Kit from eBay which has a Couple bottles of S/C Oil and a suction Bulb and such to suck the Oil out but if you watch the U-tube Movie above, you will see better how to do it! It's amazing how much this helps....It really quietens down.

To change the oil I need to remove the cover using a 5mm-3/16th Allen key but its pretty close to being rounded off by the previous owner.
I cant get in there to hammer a slightly bigger Allen key in place so I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem or knows of a cleaver way to removed the cover?

in your situation I would just order a new fill cap and after it arrives then use whatever destructive means necessary to remove the already damaged one.

I spent a long time today gently trying to undo the plug but no luck, when the new plug arrives I'm going to use a cold chisel to knock it out but I have a couple of questions first:
To unscrew the new plug I do turn anticlockwise?
Once out I'll clean and wire brush the old teeth but do I need to grease the new plug before I put it in?

I would use some anti-seize on it. Be sure to use the exact size tool when installing, so history doesn’t repeat itself. It doesn’t need crazy torque put on it. Just a good sharp snug.
PS: I always check mine whenever the hood is open to be sure it didn’t fly away. OCD at its finest.

Did you try jamming an oversized torx bit into it? The start skinny and widen as you go up the shaft of the bit. It might just catch before you have to break out the chisel...

I managed to knock the plug out using patience and a flat headed screwdriver which means the plug is ruined.
I did order a new one but that turned out to be a plug for the gearbox but SNR Barratt or Jaguar themselves can'
t find a part number for the plug.
Dones anyone know the part number?
