From looking at the JEPC, I would say that the 3.2 box is a no-no. There's no cross-correlation of the part numbers, and the diff is a different ratio.
There are matches across for the MY98/99 XK8 to the 4 litre XJ, but not for for the very early XK. Hope that makes sense!
It might be worth dropping a pm to one of the techs - motorcarman or NBCat as they will most likely know.

Cheers for both your replies. I saw a ZF5HP24 gear box listed for about £300.00 that had been refurbished but the catch was it came out of a 3.2 litre XJ8 v8. Seams if the Jag is an xk8 the prices start to rise and even more so if it's and XKR
Naturally my interest was piqued as they can get fairly pricey so...?
