Swapping Sat Nav for Gauges
#21
Just a quick follow up to my 'blue' screen issue, it appears that a brief reset (by depressing and holding the two brightness control buttons) corrected the problem and I am golden once again. I didn't blow the red/green channels like I had suspected. Had to re-adjust few things like cranking the brightness all the way back up and a little X correction thru the remote control settings....
Just a tip, place that switchbox somewhere very accessible if you get one (including the PAC unit) just in case you need to either adjust the brightness, or do this quick reset procedure when the colors go bazerk. I have mine on the passenger side, left carpet panel, just tucked behind the console piece.

Interesting thread, my only regret with our 2006 Victory Edition was it had the nav instead of the classic three gauges. I just got an email last week from the previous owner, who let me know Jaguar emailed him saying NAVTEQ came out with a new map update! Apparently you can get from either the dealer or NAVTEQ directly, so am going to contact me dealer when I get back in town.

Gauges are Placebos?
So from what I'm reading in the thread about the Ultra Gauge, the factory temp and oil pressure gauges are either very inaccurate, or only move off the "normal" center position is when something is Really out of the norm. Can you guys comment on that? If so then my desire to swap out the Nav is pointless? Maybe it's better to swap in some Autometer or other quality gauges. Maybe it's the sensors and not the gauges that are lacking calibration range?

Did you know the GVN 53 also has a built-in XM satellite radio feature? Just need to add the optional XM antenna package for $170, and plug it in.
Here's a link to the full manual, in case you wanted to see what it is and how it works.

The GVN 53 looks awesome. I am ready to toss my $50 POS Sktfi3 XM radio which fails to start half the time, and install the GVN 53 navigation with XM receiver, PAC VCI-X switch and HKS CAMP 2 meter display.
It seems like a great integration and would turn that display from an albatross to something truly useful.

That would be a great combination, you should try it! You won't have any additional inputs available for say a head unit with DVD features, but you can still use/view your jag analog clock
the remote response is not snappy like most remotes should be, but it does the job. It bugs me when my passengers try to use the screen like a touch screen. You know, this GVN black box is the same one used by Kenwood on their 7" screen units.

Project: Electronic Gauges on Nav Screen underway
I have placed my HKS CAMP 2 on order. I just ordered the base unit for now because I want to confirm compatibility with our cars, and see which gauges are supported through OBDII before I purchase any accessory sensors.
I'll keep you guys posted!

Response from PAC audio support:
They are both universal video interfaces, but the VCI-X2, was made to correct brightness issues with Nissan/Infinity.

I mounted the GVN 53 in the boot next to some aftermarket amps and a signal processor, but there should be plenty of space somewhere for that small box. You know where there might be some room...take out your inside guts of your armrest with the center console in place...look down there and see if there's enough room. If you install it with a little ingenuity and planning on the side of the tunnel, you might be able to keep the opening for the 'SD card' slot facing into the armrest and cut a small window for it to be accessed?
My next suggestion would be upside down under the dash on passenger side, towards the firewall. Accessible for updates, but not seen or kicked.
And my pac is tucked behind the carpet and the metal bracket for the radio nearest the passenger left leg. There's a plastic retaining clip that holds that carpet up against the bracket, but can be accessed really easily when the center console is removed.
BTW, if you can't get the audio for the GVN to go thru your amplifier or tapping the leads out of the deck, worst case is to use the little speaker that comes with the unit, and replace that one under the rear flap of the rear center amrest...it can do double duty as the backup sensor speaker and the nav. I'm sure you've already hatched a plan knowing you.
lemme know if I can help further! Matt

So has anyone so far done a gauge conversion? This thread really sparked my interest, and before I go modifying the engine, I think the first step logical upgrade would be to have an accurate engine monitoring system in place.. I'm now contemplating a set of autometer gauges for the dasy in place of my gps as well. Consisting of Coolant temp, oil temp, oil pressure, boost, and perhaps a transmission temp or fuel pressure??
Any thoughts?
The fabrication doesn't scare me at all as I was looking to do my dash over in carbon fiber, by just vacuum molding it. this would allow me to arrange the gauges however looks best.
