I started noticing some new noises when I cold started and first pulled out on the road. A marbles in a can sound. Only for 4-6 seconds and only until it shifted to second gear. Only happened once a day. If i let engine warm, it wouldn't happen. So mechanic let sit in his garage over night so I could reproduce the sound. Sure enough, he heard it. Used a stethoscope and even I could hear a different sound from right side tensioner. So now, after 800.00 I have replaced my third generation tensioners for new ones. The pad on the right is worn more than the left and loose. Left worn as well but not as bad. Guides looked fine and chain as well. Wonder if we're all looking at the pads wearing now with the age on our cars.

The 3rd gen Tensioners have Wear Pads that are slightly Loose to allow for Shrinkage.

But they are captive and should not detach from the Metal Mounts.

Yeah, he knew they were supposed to be loose but this one was really loose compared to the left side and the new ones.

I have a late 2002 xk8 and just poured a ton of $$$ into coolant repairs, hydraulic conv lines, rear shocks, new pads and disks, and air con repair. I just can't replace tensioners right now!! Car runs smooth as silk and synthetic oil change and such. Complete service too.
I'd rather put my 1200.00 into having my arden kit installed!!
Forget the Arden Kit!!! Get those secondary tensioners changed. I did mine at 42K miles (see thread below with pictures). The tensioners were already starting to crack. If they fail the exhaust cam will be out ot time and pistons hit valves. If you are lucky a top end overhaul at around 10K$ will fix it. My cost was less than $400.

Fix it now or pay big later.

Sorry to be so forward. But I want you to understand how important this is.

He who ignores his Tensioners could be confronted with this:

I noted in my post on this matter that the labor less parts for mine was $765.00. My 97 xk8 had 100K on her and I needed peace of mind. Car ran great but I was rolling the dice. Turns out my motor still had all the original parts. I'm a good mechanic but opted for a veteran who does this all the time. Money well spent.
