Default Tensioning Cam chains cannot see how to set the VVT units

Changing the cam chains on my early XK8 and got to start setting the tensions etc.
The manual says to fully retard the VVT system by rotating before tightening the sprocket up.
Got a VVT spanner but my VVT unit do not seem to have any method the assist rotation.
There is a large spring inside the unit fully compressed.
Assume this unit design cannot be set and work purely off the spring.
Attached photos for information.
Any practical experience and advise appreciated.

VVT unit and what I thought was the tool

Inside the VVT unit hole (compressed spring)

What I thought was the VVT setting tool

Default Binary VVT units don't need/cant be retarded?

Doing a bit of research, the early Jaguar XK8 AJ26 engine it has on/off VVT units.
These are relatively primitive and operate to advance with oil pressure and retard via spring pressure.
They are not continually variable as on the later units.
1 sec lag on operation but no EGR units fitted on these engine, there is always a positive !
Hence. I don't think they will need setting and already reset by the spring if operating correctly.
Please let me know if I'm wrong because putting it back together over the Easter weekend.
Much appreciate any experience with these binary VVT units.

Webley, That thread is for a different VVT unit.
There don't seem to any holes for any tool to retard the VVT timing (even with the correct tool).
Assume this is because they are binary units not variable on my car.
Looking for info on these early VVY units.
Thanks Damian

You can verify that it is retarded by lightly tightening the intake cam bolt and remove the cam lock tool.
Grab the intake cam with pliers and attempt to retard the cam. It should advance but not retard.

Reinstall the cam lock tool and finish tightening the sprockets.
