Default Thermostat housing issues?

I have had a cooling issue diagnosed on my 2005 xk8 as a warped thermostat housing. The mechanic cannot source the part. I have called everywhere for oem AJ89486 with no luck. Apparently Jag discontinued this oem part per a call to dealer. I feel stuck. Are there any corresponding parts that will work from experience? Perhaps from Ford? Any help appreciated.

Thanks for link. Apparently that does not fit my particular model per mechanic. The part number is AJ489486 that was just recently discontinued from Jag. It is plastic which is part of high failure rate. Wouldn't think 2005 would be difficult to source parts but has been case.

AS you have not told us what country you live in ...top right if you look at my post we cannot find one for you ....
Sounds odd to me can the warped surface not be lapped flat or a thicker gasket used ?
Though you dont say which surface is warped.
I use a 1 mm thick gasket but thats on the thermostat itself.easy to cut from gasket paper. Use an 82 deg C stat when you do fix it and monitor the engine temp with a P10 head up display $30

I think you're mechanic is wrong. It fits my car.

My mistake, sorry. I think the part from the block to the thermostat may be the same, and that's the part that failed on mine a few years ago.

How does Jag discontinue a vital component that is known to fail?? So frustrating. I.am in the.U.S. Attached is link for part:

The Ebay part looks like it's for later models. Both Heritage and the JEPC show AJ89486 as the current incarnation.

Does seem odd:- Heritage lists it with a price but out of stock.

May be worth contacting them to check:

Yes, that seems to be the case. I am calling and emailing all over the place. Something will come up eventually.

If you find a source for them, let us know. Had to replace ours back in September 2014. If we keep the car long enough (it is no longer my wife's daily driver) I know I will have to eventually replace it again....

That "part" is more of an assembly. Maybe you can figure out from the mechanic which part is actually warped and find out if it sells alone, or is part of another assembly for a similar car. Our 4.2l engine was used across a few models like S-Type, XJ and even early X150 models I believe.

FWIW, Jaguar is generally not terribly consistent when it comes to selling assemblies vs. individual parts across product lines. Some of us have been successful at identifying individual parts available for the S-Type that are unobtainium assemblies for our XK8/R. Fuel rail dampeners and vacuum booster bushings come to mind...

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Thank you for that insight regarding the assembly. So far I have struck out but will keep trying to come up with a solution. Hate the thought of driving it back home with a continuous coolant leak and leaving it sidelined in garage. It was my Dad's car who passed away recently, so I am emotionally attached to it. Hope I can continue to care for it and bring it back to good shape. It only has 64k on odometer but needs some TLC.

If you could supply a picture pinpointing the leak location we might be more able to help.

Checked RJ's parts # on Amazon and many plastic housings were available. This is a common item to fail. Had to replace mine back in 2015 when I purchased the Car.

I not too long ago (< 1 year) got an aluminum housing from rock auto. Might be worth a look to see if they have what you need.

I'm a rookie at this Jaguar stuff, so my learning curve has been steep. However, I always try to exhaust all avenues before hitting the panic button. It shows for $62 Canadian I can buy the aluminum upgrade from Rock. I did not follow through and order, so it may yet throw a curve at me, but there you are. I know how frustrating this can be, but there are a lot of helpers in this community. Good luck.

The car noted at beginning of thread is 2005 XK8 (4.2L). Not a 4.0L with the available aluminum housing. The 4.2L assembly is the part
I located on Amazon.

Well, I read this thread with great interest. Seems to have jinxed me. I was fixing my oil cooler lines recently and discovered a coolant drip. So investigation reveals a broken nipple on the fitting on top of the t-stat housing along with the plastic line coming from the filler tank broken at the other end of the ribber stubby hose. Geeeez.
What's this?? A plastic t-stat housing on my '03?? I thought all 4.2 had an aluminum one. Hmmm, so I subsequently broke off the fitting on the housing, maybe it wasn't a separate piece. I drilled it for a 1/4" pipe thread and put a plastic barb fitting in it's place. So far so good, going to a Brit Car show tomorrow.
parts searching begins. TM

I did a little surfing to find a t-stat housing. Under a part number of JLM21896 on the Jag parts fiche I found t-stat housing for $550.00!!!!! The complete assembly was not available but showed this was. Geee, thanks. Every example of AJ810214 has an extra hose fitting and a the temp sensor in the wrong place but workable. Parts Geek lists 645-08049903 T-stat housing for $160 but out of stock. It looks correct to me. AJ489486 shows up nowhere.

A coupe of years ago I thought I read here that 4.2's had an aluminum housing, Jag having learned from the 4.0 plastic housing problem. Am I wrong??
Of course the aluminum replacements for the 4.0's was mentioned. Hmmmm, TM
