Third party water pump - any recommendations for or against?
I have written in another thread Overheat conundrum of my problems with the XKR. As suggested in that thread, the most likely culprit seems to be the water pump. The water pump from Jaguar is a horrendous price, and I feel that it is probably best not to buy used - though if you think it ok to do install a second hand unit, please say so - I would welcome your views. There seems to be a whole raft of potential third party options, so I would be very interested to know of your experiences on installing a non-Jaguar part, and if you would (or, perhaps more importantly! would not) recommend that make of pump. I assume that such third-party components would be a direct fit.......
Also, as a by the way, what should I put in as coolant?
Thanks!

I ended up getting an AC DELCO brand pump. This with the metal impeller. It is supposedly more prone to cavitation as compared to plastic, but I do not run my car near max rpm. An XKR has a lower rpm limit anyway.
I got this one because the cost was competitive and it came with that big o-ring seal. Others brands do not, and some say that seal is not necessary for proper use. Unfortunately, the after market water pumps offer too many options for gasket, seals, impeller. It felt like a quality part, the fit was perfect, and I have not had any issue with it. On an XK8, it is a pretty easy job, just messy.
For coolant, the short answer is to get DEXCOOL (Orange color). The longer answer is to look up the proper reference in the Vehicle Spec Book, and look up what brands out there comply with it. Double check what is already there to make sure you can just add to it. If someone put something else, you will have to flush it out.

Thanks for these replies. What I am finding somewhat confusing here is that there is a huge range available and at a huge range of different prices (from about 25 pounds sterling to the top price I have found of 165 pounds from Jaguar themselves). They all look identical, so how would one choose between them - cheaper is not necessarily worse! None of them state the impeller material, and I have discovered a third impeller material, - ceramic - as well as plastic and metal. I don't know anything about its durability and performance, though being inflexible I assume it shares the hydrodynamic characteristics of metal. I would prefer to go with plastic, I think.

I usually buy OE Jaguar parts but exceptions are brake discs, brake pads and water pumps. Using reputable aftermarket specialists, I've never had any problems with either the direct fit or quality of these parts and have saved a lot of money.
The cooling system should be filled with a mixture of 50% plain water and 50% coolant conforming to specification WSS M97B44–D coloured orange, Extended Life Coolant.

I recently replaced my water pump and had many of the same questions/concerns as you have. I ended up going with an Airtex which I believe was the OEM supplier. The design changed slightly by not having the large ring seal on the front (updated version). The impeller is metal and it is just secured with a fiber gasket.
So far so good. No leaks and works the way it's supposed to. Think I paid around $50 for it. Changed when doing Tstat housing was probably a 15 minute job.
Cheers!

4 years ago I was replacing rad hoses and the serpentine belt. I looked at the water pump and figured it was just as well to replace it too. There is a sticky at the top of this forum about non oem replacement parts. I went to the local Ford dealer and bought a Ford water pump for about $40 cdn at the time. it was an exact replacement for a small fraction of the Jag part. Zero problems with it

The water pump Jaguar dealers supply in Jaguar boxes is the Airtex AW4124, available from Rock Auto for under USD $50.00. It has a black plastic impeller, which is the correct material to tolerate OAT coolant long-term without cavitation erosion or electrolysis.

Third party water pump
What was that Ford water pump part number? I want to keep it in my XK8 file in case I ever need it....

the gasket on the airtex is terrible, you can make it work with the old style metal gasket and a ton of rtv but the other gasket holding the two pieces together is no good either.
genuine/motorcraft is the way to go, if you’re cheap the acdelco which is basically the old 96jv but with a metal impeller is fine.
