Ticking like exhaust cooling??
Hi I am new to this forum and Jaguars! I have just purchased a 1997 XK8 with 99k on the clock and full dealer service history. I love the car it is the best looking car ever and goes well too! Engine is smooth and autobox shifts well. Apart from a couple of minor electric window issues all the electronics seem to work too!!
One thing however........after a run, whether it's a short run, long run, hard run or gentle run I am getting quite a loud and alarming ticking coming from the engine when the engine is NOT running. It sounds exactly like an exhaust or manifold cooling down but is coming from the engine and seems to go on for quite a while after stopping the car. Am I being silly to be worried about this?? Is it normal??
Any input welcomed
Cheers

RE: Ticking like exhaust cooling??
Can you be more specific where it is coming from in engine?
My 2001 does the same thing. I drive it at all and it ticks when I shut it off. I am not worried. I put the exhaust on a little tight up to the cats. I think that is what is causing it. I would need to back them off a little, but I can't be bothered right now. Done enough work on that car for now.

RE: Ticking like exhaust cooling??
Cheers for the reply
It appears to come right from the middle of the engine block, I worried that it was from inside the engine but I dare say it could have been from underneath, perhaps a heatshield or part of the exhaust system as you've said??
If anyone else has an opinion on this please let me know, the car runs great otherwise apart from some minor electric window troubles.

RE: Ticking like exhaust cooling??
The 1st problem was that the passenger window wasn't jumping back up after lowering when the door handle is opened, I have fixed it though thank to a post on this forum telling me how to reset the window!! The second problem is that my drivers window is clunky in operation, I'm pretty sure it's coming away from the runner and perhaps just needs securing??
Anyway! Back to the ticking or "pinging" noise heard when I shut off the engine. I listened some more last night and I'm convinced it is from inside the engine. I'm really quite worried about it, could it be glowing hot carbon deposits pinging around inside?? Do you recommend any fuel additives that would maybe help if it is?? ANy help appreciated as my mechanical knowledge is limited to say the least!

I know this is a very old thread but in searching it seems to be the most related to my problem. When the car has just been driven or is allowed to warm up to operating temperature I get a VERY pronounced “click”. I first assumed it was possibly the ac clutch engaging (all this happens with the key off and car stopped) but have eliminated that. I have had the car since it was 1 year old and have driven it daily and now have over 100,000 miles on it. This sound is something new and appears to come from under the intake manifold although it could be “echoing” from some other location. The sound is much like a solenoid engaging and as the engine cools the amount of time it click gets further apart until it stops when the cars is about half cooled off. The car runs good and has no codes the sound started after I had the transmission fluid changed however I do believe that was just coincidence. Any ideas?

My '97 with 100 KKm is ticking during initial 20 minutes during warm up driving and after shutdown aswell;
Not worried a bit as it's all sounding almost 'natural'; But from strange places potentially, (wheels, exhaust, engine), but I decided to pay no further attention
Not sure if this helps...

First you should give us more info on what you have...year, model at a minimum. That will help the experts (not me) help you more.
Is the clicking "rhythmic"? Meaning is it consistent with a pattern or is it random? Have you checked all the pulleys to see if you have any that are bent or maybe have a worn shaft?
New noises are not usually good, so it is a good thing you are checking it out. And you have brought on another round of everyone's favorite game, "what's that sound?".

Sorry, Year 2006 - Model XK8 - The vehicle makes the noise when it is NOT running although I thought I heard it after starting it up this morning before it had warmed up but only once. It is not a metal expansion sound and it is not consistent, but it does do it every time you stop. Thanks
