Question TRAC/ABS intermittent failure - Not sensor or solder joints. 2000 XK8

I get the same intermittent TRAC disabled error messages as many of you've experienced.

After cleaning the wheel speed sensors to no avail I decided to open up the ABS unit and check the solder joints, to my dismay they looked perfect:

Some oil leaked from one of the hydraulic lines, I think It'll be ok? Otherwise I used a dremel to open it and everything went pretty smooth.

What's the next step? I'm guessing it's the harness that needs replacing, any way to do that for cheap? I'm severely $ limited.

Check your brake fluid level and tire pressure if that is not it this check list on my page might help you in troubleshooting the problem.

Awesome, will do, but how do I check my brake fluid levels? Don't think it's tire pressure, it's been going on for a while and tire pressure has been good.

Think of it this way the ABS system is pulsing each wheel when turning and one seems to turn more or less than the other the ABS system sees this as a problem. If one tire has lower pressure than another it may cause this issue. As for the brake fluid you have a level indication on the side of the master brake cylinder look and see if the fluid is low.

I checked the resistances as instructed with the ABS module removed, they were the same with the engine on or off, all 1.11 K Ohm, don't know what to make of that.

All fuses were of course OK.

Brake fluid at near max level (checked the brake fluid tank).

Recently it seems to be going off more, it can dissapear whilst driving at times. Sometimes it's off from the second I start the car and the ABS light is on, sometimes It disables whilst driving. I'd say it usually happens every other day of use.

I would be looking at your connections, pull them apart and use a good contact cleaner I use CRC from any auto parts place. I also apply a little di-electric paste by CRC to eliminate any moisture from being part of the problem. If you look on my page you will find the wiring diagram for your car and it will give you your connector locations.

Did you have the ABS module tested for accuracy? It could be an internal problem.

Have not done a accuracy test, there are some ebay vendors that do that for $45 I believe. Could do the contact cleaner step first. How about cleaning the rear wheel speed sensors? Any chance that could help?

Couldn't find the wiring diagram on your page.

Go for it if you can. As for the testing try this place Welcome To Auto ECU Inc. They did a great job on my TB.

I had a similar problem as you.My warning were on all the time. Did all the tests, opened the module, etc. Finally sent it to Module Master and they repaired it. It was the sensor input amplifier and the pump power control circuit. Everything OK now.

Gus,

How often have you seen unequal (or too low) tire pressures trigger the ABS warning light in these XK8s? My wife mentioned last Friday that her ABS light had been on and off sporadically that morning on her drive in to work. Could be the original battery beginning to give up the ghost, but I have not seen any symptoms of that yet (windows still open slightly and then close properly whenever the doors are opened and closed). Daily temperatures are beginning to drop now as summer moves towards autumn, and her tire pressures mostly measured between 30 and 31 psi when I checked them early Saturday morning. Pumped them all up to between 33 and 34 psi where I typically keep them, and no more sporadic ABS warning lights have appeared since. So your tire pressure comment has me curious....

Here's how I fixed this problem:

First I cleaned wheel speed sensors, no luck (makes sense, why would dirt hinder a magnetic sensor).

Then I opened the TRAC box, solder was fine, put it back together, error still there.

Used contact cleaner on the front wheel harness connectors and the TRAC box connector, and voila, problem solved.

Where is the trac box at, and where are the front wheel harness?
