Trans over temp + transfault

Trans over temp + transfault
I was driving home in rush hour traffic and everything was fine until I pulled into my drivway and the the "trans evertemp/ trans fault" came up on my display. I let the car sit over night and started it up the next morning and the warning was still there. This time accompanied by the check engine light. I have not pulled codes as of yet as my shop is 20 miles away. My question is, could this be a trans temp sensor or harness issue? Also I tried to put it into gear and it has heavy shift shock when putting into forward or reverse. I assume this is a side affect of the fault code/ failsafe. Anyone have this fine experience? Maybe cut down on some of the diagnosis headache by giving me an area to look in? 2002 xkr

Hey Brian,
I don't know if this will be of any help to you, but I had the same experience last week on my 2000. I tried to start it at 7:30 AM (after a normal night of sitting in the garage) and it would not start, it just cranked uselessly. The Transmission High Temp warning light was on as well as the engine light, even though it had not been running for about 20 hours. I tried and tried to start it, but to no avail. Later in the day, I remembered this having happened a few years ago, and what I ended up doing to remedy it. I simply had to turn the key almost all the way "on" and then move the gearshift lever through the gears. Both then and now, this did the trick. Also, my shifter felt as smooth and easy as normal, not sluggish as yours seems to feel.
I hope there is something in this that is of use to you. It was not a fun experience.........until it had an easy fix!
Best of luck,
Brian

I pulled the codes and found the following. P0705(trans range sensor ckt malfunction). I also found P1111, and then P1000.( no info on those but if I had to guess they would be CAN codes.) . I erased the codes and went to shift to reverse and it came back. After trying this a couple of times I had the same results as above, it started working normal. test drove vehilce after this and all was well. I know it will come back, and with that being said, Gear selector sensor, or harness? Can someone give me a direction to start? I am a master tech so I am capable of running any test. Also does the trans overtemp warning come on do to this. Thanks for any help
