I have a 1997 xk8 with 70000 miles on it. The transmission was replaced 2000 miles ago. Since then when i accelerate on occasion it "bangs" into gear. Most of the time its smooth going through the gears but every now and then there is a hard bang into the next gear. I bought is after the transmission was replaced from a mechanic friend. and he was willing to bring it to where he had the transmission replaced. He brought it to the transmission guy but he could not get the transmission to bang.into gear. I still have this problem. i really don't want this to go on much longer.
Any suggestions?

Cgriffasi,
That's a terrible situation to be in - only 2000 miles on a new gearbox before you start having problems - are these the same problems that you had previously? When you say the transmission was replaced on your 1997MY car, what exactly was replaced? Is it a re-conditioned unit with a warranty?
Intermittent problems are the worst to diagnose. Does the bang happen at any gear or only in certain situations? Random or when car is cold? Is the car struggling to take off in 1st gear, and or slipping downshifting 2-1-stop too. Does the car easily go to reverse?
If you're mechanically inclined, the first things to do are the easy-to-do checks. Is the gearbox ATF fluid at the right level? Gearbox "stutter" is a classic sign of overfilled ATF, as the fluid foams and "cooks." Then you're into checking out the valve body and solenoids. Not normally home DIY-able though. Then you're into removing the transmission again and inspecting drums, clutch friction plates etc.
Good luck ...… and hope you have a good warranty.

Good advice above +1
Before going the A drum route check the fluid level and do a hard reset. If all checks well consider an additive for the ZF. Can't recall the specific one (someone will know). Maybe Transgo shudder fix it's very good stuff. That's where I would start. Good Luck and let us know what you find out.

Hey Gus thanks for posting the ATSG link. Could very well be the problem he is having but, it sounds like he has pretty good forward movement and he's getting the banging only occasionally. However, the pressure regulator valve could cause this fault. Especially if they did not put in the updated vale when doing the rebuild.
I just figured he might want to eliminate the easy stuff first and see how it goes. Worth a shot, should only be minimal expense and time to rule out the easy stuff.
Cheers
