Transmission Filter

I was going to order my pan and filter so I could change my transmission oil. It's a 4.0 , 99 XK8. I went on a few online site and found there was a filter $21. I thought I had the built in filter in the pan. All three places I checked had the separate filter, is that right. Has anyone done the 99 and know ?

You're right that it's got the separate filter. Luckily, the filter kit's not expensive. It's the automatic transmission fluid that sets you back mucho dollars. I found Castrol Import ATF @ O'Reilly's and Autozone, which is much more reasonably priced than the ZF fluid.
I have not had time to change my fluid, as I've got to replace the fuel pump first.
Reverend Sam has a good UTube video that shows what you can get into while changing the fluids--even though he's got a different transmission than the 99 model ZF trans.
We have a small father/son automatic transmission shop outside our little town. I'm thinking about getting them to change my fluid as it's a pretty dirty, stinky job. Changing the fluid is a necessary maintenance chore, however.
Good luck!

You have a ZF5HP24.
If you want to use the CORRECT OEM fluid you can get it from O'Rielly autoparts as..
Line: PNT (Pentosin ATF1)
Part number: FFL1-1L
This is the Pentosin fluid for some of the Jaguar/BMW/Audi/VW transmissions.
ESSO LT41171 and VW G052162A2 are the exact same fluid.
Pentosin ATF1-1L - Automatic Transmission Fluid | O'Reilly Auto Parts
It is $14.99 a liter so it is about the same price as the VW fluid.
RockAuto has the ATP B346 filter (kit) for $14.50
More Information for ATP B346
This is what I get for my customers so there is no arguing about fluid compatibility.
If you are changing your own fluid you can put whatever you want in it and it may work fine. I can't take that chance.
I do use the Castrol Import Multi Vehicle ATF for the Jaguar/VW Jatco JF506E as it meets those specs.

I used Mobil 1 AFT synthetic multi-vehicle in my '97 ZF5HP24. It is compliant w/ all the ESSO LT41171specs and readily obtainable almost everywhere. I was unavware that Pentosin was an approved fill; but had I known that, I would have chosen that over the Mobil 1 product.
Personally I think the whole 'correct fluid' debate has been made way too complicated. When I researched which fluid to use, I ended up w/ the Mobil 1 because it was approved by ZF for this trans in other applications as well as our Jaguar.
I ran into the same ATF issues with my BMW 325xi. I could never understand the logic of owners willing to pay $75/liter for OEM ATF when the transmission mfr readily approves generic brands as replacement fills.
Of course, there are some fluids which cannot be mixed; like Mercon and Dextron; however, the the multi-vehicle formulas are made to be compatible with a wide range of ATF and I am comfortable using them when both ZF and the oil companies approve them as replacement fills.
