Transmission Problems
I've been a ASE Master certified automotive technician since 1987. I had my votec training in Fairbanks, Alaska. At Hutchison Career Center, 680 hours. I've had smog licenses in Alaska and California. I hold many advanced certifications in different areas. In the past I only ever reviewed forums as a last ditch effort on difficult diags. Nothing against them, just never had the time to sit and chat. Time was money. I've always worked at fast paced shops and tried to stick with electrical diag problems. No Heavy Metal!! Sometimes I did get stuck performing engine/trans overhauls. I purchased two Jags from a shop where I had worked. One was 1999 XK8 convertible engine code o, and the other was 2000 s-type. The S-series had overheated and burned a valve which I replaced the valves and sold. The 1999 XK8 conv 4.0L eng code 0, I gave to my mother in-law for her 80th birthday. Originaly it was thought to of had a bad trans, which had been rebuilt two years prior. I checked it over, and it was only low on fluid. After 15k miles, it would occasionaly show a trans fault and would go into limp mode. After cycling the key it would drive fine. Fluid still full. Last night it happened again. I cycled the key and put it in drive, but when I accellerated, it sounded like it was thrown into park and the parking paw was skipping, metal on metal noise. When I tried to start it again, the engine would not turn over, like engine was locked up. When it cooled off it finally restarted, it was still making the metal on metal noise in park. I'm thinking it could be the A or B drums in the trans possibly skipping. The trans has been shuddering in lockup on slight accelleration. I have two questions:
1) Has anyone experienced the 5HP24 trans locking up making cranking over difficult? Years ago I had a customer's Oldsmobile trans Lockup and the engine wouldn't crank over.
2) Has anyone used the XTOOL D7 for pulling trans codes on a 1999 Jag or earlier? I need a good cheap euro scanner for home.
Thanks for listening.
3) What's all of this stuff between post a new thread and submit new thread.
apk avi bin bmp cfg csv doc docx ecu efi gif gsc hex hpl hpt html jpe jpeg jpg mov mp3 mpeg mpg msl msq pdf png pps psd rar table tun txt vex wav wmf wmv xls xlsx xml zip
Just curious

What I know about the 4.0 XK8 transmissions may not be of any help, as my XKR uses a different transmission, but here goes:
On the 4.0 XK8’s, the A drum has a history of failure.
don’t know if that applies to your situation, but it can’t hurt to know .
Best of luck with the diagnosis. Please post back if - when you find the issue.
