Transmission "reluctantly" goes in reverse.

UPDATE: Well.... It gets worse. The microswitches are sealed and riveted to the bracket so they cannot be serviced. I sprayed a little contact cleaner just in case there was some external grundge. Then I turned on the battery and made sure I had all the lights PRND432. The car backed up fine. I thought maybe those switches were a little dirty and by some miracle of Memorial Day (I am a vet) fixed it.
Not so fast..... my kitty said when I took her for a test drive. Less than a mile down the road I stopped and my problem had returned.
So, I turned around and put the J gate in manual 2 and I had a rev up but no power. Now all the manual gears are disabled and when the car is in drive I now have a new "gearbox fault" message. This is the first time I have had this fault.
I didn't mess with anything other than unscrew the top the of J Gate to allow me to inspect the microswitches and reassembled it. Now it is worse than it ever was.
If I take the console apart again. What would I look for to solve this new problem?

It possibly points at a drum failure, but it could be a badly adjusted or lose selector cable or a bad speed sensor inside the box.
- Adjust the selector cable according to procedure in JTIS.
- Clean electrical connectors at the rear left of the box and by cable from rotary switch.
- Drop pan and look for metal fragments. This would confirm mechanical failure.

Thank you for your input. This forum is the best! The selector cable looks solid. After reading all the ideas and suggestions, I think the route I am going to pursue in solving this problem with be the following:
I'm going to purchase a new pan kit and have my mechanic pull the old one and inspect what's inside. If it is clean with no metal, He will replace the filter and sensors and refill.
If there are shavings or metal bits than I will be purchasing a reconditioned transmission and replace the old one.
I think it is the most conservative route. I intend to keep this car. It is extremely clean and turns heads wherever it goes. I will just chock this up as the cost of ownership.

ZF is the name of the manufacturer. They make many transmissions, including the 5HP24 (for the 4.0 XK8) and the 6HP26 (for the later 4.2 XK8 and XKR).
Also, if you look this up on Wikipedia, you will find that this particular 5HP24 model has been used on several different cars (Jaguar and BMWs mostly). To the best of my understanding, although many parts are the same, a transmission made for one car does not necessarily fit on another.

UPDATE: I finally bit the bullet and purchased a used transmission with 40k miles and had my mechanic install it today. I had them replace the filter and put Pentosin inside. It now runs sweet and smooth......but...... after a 20 minute drive I developed check engine light, poor vehicle performance and engine fault messages. According to OBII codes I have one fault P0171 and a pending fault P0131.
I drove 3 miles back home and now wonder what I need to troubleshoot this problem. After each code it says Powertrain and then the Code. When I got home I also did a hard reset and that worked for a an hour.
Since I am not a mechanic but a reliable check writer with the nearest Jag dealer over 300 miles away, I would appreciate any sage advice thrown my way.

Thank you . I agree - I did clean the MAS and the throttle body. and reset the ECU. Wow! Did that make the engine run super smooth. However after about 25 minutes of town driving the codes came back. This time however the engine fault and decreased engine performance did not display. I now have a check engine light and codes P0171 and a pending fault P0131

MediaBobNY, you're wrong about this member. I personally spoke to him on the phone when he first had his problems. I have replied to his post and didn't get a THANKS. I wasn't even an issue with me. I get more satisfaction by getting someone's car back on the road than if I get a THANKS or not. When I first joined the forum I got help from motorcarman, sparkenzap, RJ237, and many others without pushing the THANKS button because I didn't understand it at the time.
I live 15 minutes from Jaguar of Sacramento and I won't take my cars there unless I have no other choice. If the only way you can get your car repaired is by taking it to the dealer the junk yards would be full of Jaguars. Because it is not feasible to put a $8000 new transmission in a car that is only worth $5000. I thought thats what this forum was for was to help people get their cars back on the road without having to go to the dealer.
I'm glad to see this post that he got his transmission issue fixed. Now let's help him get this issue fix because he is a valuable member of this forum.
PS. BRADSTUFF if you like this post push the THANKS button on the bottom right of this post.

Please let me apologize for not hitting the Thanks button. To be honest I didn't think it was of use to let alone a gauge as to whether I was telling the truth. I am not even sure what was meant by being caught in a lie. I did not look at Google Maps and put the exact mileage to the dealership in my response but I knew that I didn't want to take it there after asking around. As a senior member MediaBobNY, I would think you would ask if I understood the Thanks button and how important it is to you before making such false accusations.
This forum has been invaluable to me and my Jag journey. I think that I have been very appreciative in thanking those who have provided advice and assistance I just didn't know how vital it was to hit the THANKS button.
BobRoy has been an amazing help. Without him, I would not have been able to fully replace my transmission for less than 2k which I think exceeded my expectations. In addition, I have ordered a new o2 sensor (bank 1 Sensor 1) and will put in in when it arrives.
My sincere apologies to everyone I failed to hit the THANKS button for but I hope my words of thanks will somehow be sufficient.

It's a two step forward, one step back affair. I have rebuilt 3 ocean going sailboats and it's a similar activity.
But anyone sensitive as the Veteran Troll, should please understand that questioning someones honesty might just limit the number of people who might want to participate in these forums. I will continue to do so because I have made some nice acquaintances here and intend to help others as I can in that same spirit.
