Transmission slip issue

I have talked to about 8-20 transmission specialists and non of them want to even consider it an A Drum failure and look at me like they have no idea on what I am talking about. They all want to do a rebuild and say that is what I need, sight unseen, just seems to me they are all just trying to maximize their profit.
Wish someone in the Chicago area could help me find someone around here to get the car looked at, fixed.

No, an ecm or other electronic module wig-out will not give you the mechanical clunking you're hearing.

So with what you are saying, it has to be an internal transmission issue, not electrical or computer related, causing the issue etc.?

I dropped off the XK8 to a guy today and he said it was more then likely the A Drum but he said he won't replace just the A Drum as there is a good chance there are broken peices off inside the transmission and risks that doing damage in the future, is this accurate or is something he could just replace the Drum and clear out the peices if there are any?
Or does he just want to do the full rebuild to make more money etc.?

I'm with you in that I would just change the broken parts but I would be doing my own work and taking the chances on my own clock of going back into it. I'm one of those that enjoys working on the car as much as driving it ("no mister fox, don't throw me in the briar patch!".

I'm on board with the idea that if you could source a used transmission to swap into the car it would be cheaper or at least on par with the labor and parts of an A-drum swap. Then you would have a chance of selling it with less financial damage. As a next step, I would see if your transmission guy can get a used unit for cheap.
Good luck,
Mike

The ZF trans has proven itself to be somewhat unreliable with it “A” drum, you have the ones that have failed and the ones that are going to fail. Who is going to tell you how long the replacement is going to last? In my opinion the amount of money you spend on a used unit and have the old one replaced you could get yours rebuilt/repaired and have a reliable unit. Just my opinion!
