Type and amount of Transmission fluid?
All,
I used to be a regular here getting help with my 2000 XK8 but the thing has been spot on perfect for a long, long time now. I'm up to 140,000 miles, completely carefree for the past 4 years! It can be done!
This morning after sitting all night in warm weather the gearbox didn't want to shift from first into second. I slowed back down into first gear range, moved the lever into 4 and when I accelerated back up it shifted normally. I oven the lever into Drive and it was great all day. After lunch it was the same deal.
No codes. I changed the fluid and filters at about 76,000 miles 7 years ago - I suppose that's the first thing I should do, I didn't realize it had been so long and I drove it so much.
What is the best thinking today on the type and amount of fluid?
Thanks!

Gearbox type and
Spurlee,
4 years without a problem on your XK8 - that's really good going.
For the gearbox, first you need to identify what gearbox you have, as your 2000 may have the ZF5HP24 or the Mercedes 722.6 gearbox. I suspect you have the latter. Lots of recent info on this forum for possible suitable ATF substitutes which are cheaper that the ZF brands, and seem to work just as well. Some links below to peruse.

Check out Don B's definitive list in post no.5
For my ZF5HP24 transmission ATF and filter change, I ended up using 7L of LiquiMoly ATF1200 with the British Parts complete service kit BPK270 which cost only GBP92. I also changed out all the T27 pan holding bolts as some were badly corroded.

Good to hear it's been so reliable and hope another fluid and filter change fixes the transmission issue.

Congrats on the happy motoring
Capacity is ~10.5 quarts/11 litres, although you will only get around 6 or 7 of those out on a drain, as the rest stays in the torque convertor, etc.
Consider replacing the main pressure valve while you have the pan off. See member BobRoy's thread:

Is there a discrepancy to the types of Transmissions in our cars other than:
- 5-speed ZF 5HP24 automatic (Naturally aspirated models) (1997–2002)
- 5-speed Mercedes-Benz W5A580 5G-Tronic automatic (Supercharged models only) (1998–2002)
- 6-speed ZF 6HP26automatic (2002–2005)

Costs to change transmission fluid
The local sports car/import place quoted me $575 to change the fluid, filter and gasket. Probably a fair enough price for southern Wisconsin.
My regular mechanic says the book time is 2 hours. I have $110 in fluid, filter and gasket. (Rock Auto Liqui Moly ATF 1200). He's not familiar with this transmission, of course, but I'll guide him through the fine points and share the very good ZF video I found.
I figure about $350 to get the job done. That's comparable to what I paid 7 years ago...
