Default unusual humming noise

stick with me here - don't think it's my imagination, at certain low(ish) speeds i occasionally hear a humming (a kind of) wheel bearing noise, (seemed to be r/h front area) drove 50 miles one way yesterday didn't notice any sound at all - one the return trip the sound reared it's head now and then (only say between 20 mph and 40) for the 1st 40 miles then disappeared again - it's not noise off the tyres/road is it? it would immediately disappear on certain road surfaces ( all A roads) - sorry it's a bit vague ... kind of medium 'whooooo' sound - not high pitched if you get my meaning

Could just be the texture of the surface of that particular road is setting up a resonance with your ties/suspension at that speed range. There is a stretch of road here at between 50-55 sounds like like w wheel bearing going bad.

Update on this - this noise only happens on Motorway type roads ... it doesn't happen at all on all other types of roads, i can get up to the same speeds on other than Motorway surfaces - it's a puzzler? I just did a perfect 600 Mile trip - car was beautiful, i was sitting watching as it hit 150 000 Miles as we left Wales into England and wished it a happy birthday - what a car!

i have a 2002 XKR with 150,000 miles as well. I noticed a tapping that when I accelearated because of the rapidity of the tapping turned into a sort of hum. I have heard it for about a month. At first I thought it might be a bearing in the engine or supercharger, but I had someone in the car with me to concentrate on listening and he said the sound was coming from rear of the car. Last Thursday, it became demonstrably louder, and I took it into my mechanic. He said they have traced it to the bearings in the differential. They will open it up tomorrow and take a look.

mine's isn't a tapping noise and it's only making a humming noise on certain road surfaces. quiet as it should be at all other times ... i am as i have said puzzled. When i took my car to a specialist Sports Car garage he said my XK has the quietest sweetest engine with the cleanest emissions he has ever seen/heard. Mine's does run on LPG too tho'.
