Default Upper control arm

I have fitted power flex bushes to the upper control arm, they come with the washers that you can see in the picture. Do you know if I still need to use the shims as per setup for a UK car? Also do you need the end pieces? Thanks

What does the supplier of the bushes recommend?

If there is sufficient space, it would seem the shims and other factory parts should be refitted.

I did mine a while back but yes I believe you have to install ALL of the washers and shims (make sure you put the shims in their proper locations - they are two different thicknesses) so the caster is in spec. There is a diagram floating around with the placement.

The factory shims determine the caster angle, they should be installed in the same order they were before removal.

Rabs..Im on with the same job with the same powerflex bushes.

From my measurements with digital calipers, the original bush with sleeve, hat washers etc is 57mm
(THIS DOSE NOT INCLUDE THE SMALLER SHIM WASHERS)

The powerflex is 57mm with sleeve and the two washers supplied..

So you only need to fit the original small shim washers with your new bush and washers, in the same order and place they came from.
IF you ever go back to original OEM in the future you might want to keep the old hat washers (if in good condition)
as they dont come with the OEM bush
Im now waiting on delivery of four 6mm x 1mm stainless steel grease nipples to fit to the control arms so i never have to dismantle for re greasing when needed,i will also drill three small holes in each sleeve if i can so the grease will get to the control arm bolt...........

Rabs,
As described by everyone here, the shim-washers must be replaced to retain wheel Castor angle.
My car is similar to yours ('03 XKR) and this annotated pic is my exact set-up with Poly bushes..

yes looks like there is enough space. Nothing on power flex website saying either way. I will refit all the standard shims. Have the set up info from the jaguar manual. Thanks

Rabs...
For your information, the diagram for the shim packs in post 5 (blindside) is for N.America.
Post 7 (PKWise) shim packs are set up for N.America, with something strange about the O.D of the first thick shim (in shim pack 1)

UK shim packs...
Pack 1...One Thick
Pack 2...One Thick....Two Thin
Pack 3...One Thick....One Thin
Pack 4...One Thick....One Thin

Grazie

mchiti1,
Yes. Still need the shims with power flex - same thickness and positions.

Sì. ancora bisogno degli spessori con power flex - stesso spessore e posizioni.

Are there any "tricks" as to how to get all of the shims in place? It seems that it will be a crazy tight fit.

I had trouble finding the Jaguar part numbers, so I'm pasting them below (2006 XK8) in case it might be convenient for others.MJA1462AB – upper control arm bushing, order 2 for each side

MJA1467AA – THICK shims, need 2 for each side

MJA1467BA – THIN shims, need 2 for each side

Also, any "tricks" as to getting the ball joint pressed out? It seems to be too thin around the joint to use a conventional ball joint press method.

Peter, the ball joint needs to have the edges cut off at the outer part. Just be careful while cutting.
Do a search and you should come up with RD's efforts of that one.
Good luck.

Oh man, I’ve been driving shimless for about a year since I changed to the powerflex bushes. I didn’t know they were necessary to keep... I threw mine out with the old bushes.

Does anyone know where I can source the shims, or alternatively, the thickness and diameter of the shims so that I can refit them?

Good luck.
That is what the book says, however l found the major diameter of the ball
joint is a very neat fit in a commonly available steel pipe (cannot remember size), using a short length of this for support avoids the need for trimming the flange.

Hey Giandanielxk8,

The Jaguar part numbers are:

MJA1467AA – THICK shims
MJA1467BA – THIN shims

The diagram in post #5 above shows the thickness of each shim.

THICK = 0.063" (1.6 mm)
THIN = 0.035" (0.9 mm)
