Thank you for the reply...I have asked JDHT the question...but I haven't heard back yet. This VIN issue is really odd. I have run the CARFAX and VIN Checkup reports and nothing out of the ordinary shows up. I am the 3rd owner of this car and have the complete maintenance records...everything looks normal...so I've got to assume that this car came from the factory with this discrepancy. I'll keep looking.

Well...it's a little hard to imagine that a typo on the ID tag would have made it out the door....but I can't find any logical reason that would account for the letters on the VIN. Everywhere else, the windscreen, above the battery, the current title to the car, all of the maintenance records and even the original window sticker from 1998 have the correct VIN indicated.
Very curious.

Causing lots of confusion to those who make VIN Decoder web pages!
To clarify just a bit, though.....
The USA didn't assign the VINs. That is, when the cars arrived to the USA, USA officials did not assign or change the VINs.
Jaguar assigned the VINs in accordance with USA requirements. When the cars hit USA shores they already had USA -compliant VINs assigned.
Cheers
DD

The world's most boring job, copying build information over to the VIN label. It looks like they copied the paint code by mistake.

I thought I'd outsmart you all and figure out what the "CS" means. Went and looked at my 99XK8 VIN - no extra letters.
Then spent the last hour trying to figure out what "CS" might mean. Found almost nothing. Found one reference to what is called a VIN "trailing code" that a factory can add internally to the end of the VIN to track the vehicle's destination. Their chart said that CS means "no destination". (But this was referenced in general for VIN codes. not for Jaguar.)
Now I am caught up in this mystery....
Please solve!

Ok, you asked for help. You got it....
So what does our friend Google say? CS is clearly an acronym. I believe it stands for Constant Speeding, because it is unlikely to be Catastrophically Slow.
For another 300 or so alternatives check here. Acronyms of CS
I hope my undoubted but questionable erudition helps.
On a more serious note, I wonder whether it could indeed have anything to do with proposed export country, as Tijoe suggests. But if that were the case then one would expect many exported Jags to share the same CS letters. This really is an intriguing issue, because if it does mean an unassigned country for export, then surely all left hand drive cars should have the same designation.
