Default VIN Mystery

Hello all;

I've got a "1997" XK8 Coupe. I put the year in quotes because in a few documents I've seen - including the official Jag "Vehicle Specifications" document found in the sticky FAQ thread- the first VIN listed for 97 XK8s ends in 001246. No VIN previous to that is shown.

My VIN ends in 001114.

What would that mean? I've done a bit of searching, and haven't come up with anything yet. Any thoughts?

(My full VIN is SAJGX5748VC001114)

Thanks.

I'm not sure about your sequence number data, but from the 10th digit ("V") in your VIN, the car is clearly identified as a 1997 model year car. Is there another sticker in your driver's door jamb that gives the month/year of production? I'm guessing that it would indicate some time in the summer/fall of 1996.

Your car is listed in Jaguars data base as a 1997 coupe sold on 10.14.97 by Bob Dunn Jaguar

Jaxkr-

Yeah, I've seen that history on the car as well. I just wondered why my VIN number was lower than the first VIN listed in the Jag documentation.

Thanks.

I'm afraid that I don't understand what is magical about "001246". I just picked out one random Jaguar TSB:
http://matt.zenfolio.com/2010-03-28_...ight_vents.pdf
It clearly starts the 1997 MY at "001001", which is what I would expect. That suggests that yours is the 114th XK8 off the production line.

Phil Porter's "Jaguar XK8" has a wealth of information on the model. Per Porter, the last of the verification prototypes were built in January 1996 (these were the Geneva and New York Show cars). The first customer's car ("Job 1") was completed on 4 June 1996. Jaguar's target for the US was to sell 2200 XK8s in the first three months - 30% coupes, the rest convertibles. I would imagine that your car was amongst this initial group.

Thanks SCMike, that's more what I would expect to see. My confusion was rooted in seeing an incorrect starting VIN number in an official Jag document...although I could have misinterpreted it.

I'll check out the Porter book, just for kicks.

Thanks again for the help.
