Default Water Pump Replacement

I there any way to tell if your water pump has been upgraded to the metal impeller? I have RealGuage installed and from reading the forum I seem to run hotter than most when stuck in traffic. T-stat was done last year at the same time as the pri and sec tensioners and chains so that should be OK (yes?). Suggestions?

A.f.a.i.k. OE Jaguar water pumps all have plastic impellers and metal ones are after market.

Early plastic impellers were a problem which was resolved but that could affect your MY if it still has the original pump fitted.

If you doubt the efficiency of the water pump, the only way to be certain about the material and condition of the impeller is to take the pump off.

Hi.

There are different opinions about aftermarket pumps with metal impellers. Some of them start leaking and cavitating has also been reported as a problem.
Take a look at attatched TSB.

Morning Graham, I was thinking of replacing my water pump on a Nov 1999 XK8 with an AJ27 engine, would this M.Y have the improved unit? I can get a new aftermarket one from Jaguar spares N.E for £42.50 which is supposed to be a better than O.E unit. No overheating issues known but as you know only covered 350 miles since purchase so just thinking of preventive steps. DO you think it would be worth changing the O.E unit?
Thanks for any advice offered.
Regards,
Arty.

Arty,

There's no point in replacing a perfectly good pump but, other than in the case of bearing failure, it's impossible to assess condition without taking it off.

I always like to do fluid changes on a new (to me) vehicle and would flush and change the coolant. If you do this, the pump can be checked at the same time.

Take note of oyster's warning about metal impellers which have a poor reputation and check before buying. Jaguar Spares N.E. supply quality parts at good prices and I'd be surprised if they stock this type.
