Default Whats the diff between vert and coupe springs?

Is it a matter of weight distribution? or fitment?

can't seem to find a ref.

Question stems from the fact that I'm finding couple only versions of lowering springs in US.

Why won't they work on vert???

Thanks for the help.

When you remove the roof from a coupe to make a convertible, you lose a lot of strength in the structure. The convertibles have a lot of added braces to try to regain the strength, but in the end the body still isn't as stiff as a coupe in most cases.

Therefore the convertible suspension springs are softer than a coupes so they don't transfer as much force from an impact to the weaker body structure.

I thought it was the other way around; vert springs are stiffer because they have to carry the extra weight of the extra bracing.

Either way I don't think it makes much difference. People have installed lowering springs on the convertibles without any issues. But read my disclaimer. Don't buy springs and then say "but Sam said they would work!" I have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm sure someone else will chime in with a more authoritative sounding opinion soon.

I fit the same springs to convertibles as to coupes, it really depends who you buy them from, some companies specify one or the other, but I have never found any probs

Well to be quite honest I don't KNOW for sure on the XK, that statement was meant to be more of a generalization based on what I know is done for cars like the Mustang and Camaro.

As everyone knows, convertibles are less structurally sound than coupes. The lack of the fixed roof element manifests itself into chassis flex and cowl shake. Additonal support material welded into the convertibles helps reduce these undesirable effects somewhat (and makes the convertibles weight more than the coupes). To further improve the ride quality in the convertibles, softer sping rates are frequently used on the convertibles (versus stiffer spring rates on the coupes). Even your 2001 SVT Cobra convertible came from the factory with softer spring rates than my 2001 SVT Cobra coupe.

SVT engineers had been quoted in past interviews as saying that 18" wheels and tires were the optimum size for the S197 Mustang chassis. This was specifically given as the reason the production GT500KR came with 18" wheels versus the 20" wheels on the KR prototype. However, once the 2009 Challenger and 2010 Camaro came out with 20" rims, Ford felt pressured to at least offer 19" wheels on the Mustang. The 2010 GT500 coupes get the 19" wheels, but the smaller sidewall of the 19s would magnify the chassis flex and cowl shake on the 2010 GT500 convertibles. So the 2010 GT500 convertibles keep the 18" wheel size of previous year GT500s in order to improve ride quality.
“To compensate for the reduced structure of an open car, engineers often will make the suspension softer, making the convertible a boulevard cruiser,” said Oppenheiser. “Instead, we took the more difficult, but better path of bolstering structure rather than softening the suspension. We didn’t change a strut, bushing or spring rate from the Camaro coupe.”

Good news.
I found it a bit strange that some would offer the vert only; then some don't mention.

H&R has a spring set available here for $309. I've enjoyed thier spring sets in the past on my bmws.

Any idea what the spring rates are?? for stock?
