When Jaguar says you must have a new engine
#62
The day before Thanksgiving, i.e. Novemebr 21 , I'm to get my Jag back. So- now with brand new valves, valve springs, valve guides and pushrods, is there anything I have to be aware of that the dealer may not mention, such as anything to do as in a 'break in' period, or is it just good to go chasing Porsches again?

the saga goes on
Jaguar has had my XKR since 10-10-12. I was supposed to pick it up yesterday, which was 11-21-12, but alas and more's the pity, it seems that the shims supplied were not the correct ones, so it will now be another week. As I write this, if my math is correct, it is as of today 42 days, or 6 weeks they have had my car, and now it is to be 7? The smell of fish is still in the air. To add to my trifling inconvenience of not having my car for 6 weeks going on 7, they say their agreement with the Bank compels them to only allow their loaners to go 150 miles from the dealership when on courtesy loan. This would presumably force me to rent a car to go to Minneapolis this weekend for the Big Ten football game with Minnesota and Michigan State University, or to fly with short term pricy tickets and rent a car(the trip is 4.5 hours, and by car less a hassle than the blocking out of two hours before the flights and the 1.5 hours of flying time and the waitiing for the baggage and the rental car dance).
Thanks for allowing me to vent. What is normal for a turnaround time on a warranty claim to redo valves on a JAG V8?

Ah, but it's not knowing what you missed that gets you
As for the moderators, i've probably been the recipient of more help than almost anybody else that's visited these forums.
I must have bored them to death, bored them to tears, and bored them to sleep at various times, yet they've always been among the first to step forward with advice, solutions and support.

Dont know if this will help, but the valve shims are ordered by the technician. He calculate the thickness for each and give this info to the parts dept who orders them. What I am trying to say is, it's the dealers service dept's mistake not jaguars. Armed with this you may be able to get them to waive the restriction on the rental. Sorry I did not get this info to you before Thanksgiving.

When Jaguar says you musat have a new engine
Today I was informed that JAG needs another week to finish the work. This wiill make 9 weeks they have had my car. They said that it took 3 weeks to get an insurance approval from the warranty. That means 6 weeks to get valves, guides, push rods and springs, mill the heads and install gaskets and heads. I am disappointed- I will be driving the Land Rover to Indianapolis with my son to see the Big 10 Championship game between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Nebraska Corn Huskers in the
home of the NFL Colts, Lucas Oil Stadium. When I drive my JAG, everyone looks at it and most give me a thumbs up. Driving the Land rover, noone sems to notice or care. I MISS MY PINACHE-THAT OF THE JAGUAR MARQUE.

Arland, I feel your pain, brother! If I lived closer, I would let you take my Jag out for a spin, to help you overcome your withdrawl symptoms! Your long wait on repairs is taking a toll on all of us! Stay strong!
Cheers!
Jon

What I am dying to know is- 2 things- first, what was the likely cause, and second, do I get a warranty extension of 2 months due to no use by their action of my vehicle?? At $300 plus per month, that is not inconsequentiial.
Meanwhile, I remark about every JAG I see. We are looking for a nice XJ8 to add to our garage- it is a 31 mpg car with its all aluminium body (I use the British spelling of aluminum as a courtesy to our friends in the home country of origin of our beloved JAGS) and of course then doesn't rust in the Northern States that apply copious amounts of salt on the road iin winter. With 2 JAGS we will likely not be woithout one.
Thankyou all for helping me through my withdrawal. 9 weeks to me seems excessive, but the JAG dealer here said, well, it took 3 weeks for the warranty insurance company to make a decision. I thought that was a suggestion, but then that's just how I roll. Thanks to all again.
