Where can I find the engine number ?
Doing winter maintenance I noticed that one of the oil cooler hoses is starting to weep at the metal/rubber junction. ( I'm aware of the TSB on this )
I'm talking to SNG Barratt about parts and they have quoted a different (MJE7471AB) part number for one hose than what I expected (MJE7461AB) . I provided the VIN to them. Looking at their online parts catalogue it seems that the part number changes after a certain engine number.
I don't want to ship the wrong hose so I'm wondering where to find the engine number......one assumes on the block somewhere
Any help is appreciated

To my knowledge, it goes by the last digits of the VIN, not the engine number. There seem to be 2 different models of radiators with different fittings.
FWIW, in my interpretation, the oil pump pressure is "pushed" to the head through the cooler. Net result, all 4 hoses see that (high) oil pressure, so if one is leaking, you might want to change all 4. I did not initially do that on my own car, and had to live with the consequences. And, yes, I realize this entire set of 4 is pricey. A tow home is not cheap either!
Best of luck.

The following is direct from the shop manual:
The engine number (10 digits) is stamped on a raised pad on the front of the engine block near the thermostat housing. The piston
grade reference (8 digits) is also shown.
Most all Jaguar parts are sold by VIN number and not by engine number. You can ask SNG Barratt for advice or go to New and Used OEM and Aftermarket Jaguar Parts Online Catalog and send in a parts inquiry. Dan will answer your question by the next day.

The LATER engines have the number (DATE CODE) on the left side of the block behind the motor mount.
P.S. There is no need to type or say the word NUMBER after VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) as the N in the acronym VIN stands for NUMBER. Vehicle Identification Number Number (redundant !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!)
The term VID Number is more correct. (Vehicle IDentification Number)

fmertz : I intend to change all four but I'm not confident that I'm being quoted the correct part number for one of the hoses. My plan is to go to the dealer and get them to tell me the correct number based on my VIN. It should match either my number or SNG Barratt's ....Then I'll make my parts order

This question leads me to think US and Canadian vehicle registration documents DON'T include engine number?
Across Europe we have a standard four page Registration Certificate (V5C) which shows current owner and previous owner details together with vehicle information including VIN and Engine Number:
(click on the image to enlarge it)
This is page 2 of the V5C for my 2005 XK8 Coupe. VIN and Engine Number arrowed in red.
If US/Canadian registration documents don't have this level of detail, how is the vehicle positively identified?

Can't speak for US.....and they may even vary from state to state down there. But Nfld Canada registration is a single of heavy paper about 1/2 the size of a A4 (letter size ) sheet. It has the Make , Model, body style and VIN , the plate number and the current owners name and address. plus the date it was issued. That's it
