Default Why is the expansion hose a hard pipe?

I managed to break this expansion hose, so I'm temporarily replacing it with a length of rubber coolant hose.

My question is why is this hose actually a hard plastic pipe? Will using the rubber hose cause any issues like collapsing or anything else?

Thanks!

I replaced mine with fuel line a couple of years ago, no problems.

Me too. Way back in November 2014 when I had to replace the coolant outlet pipe assembly....

it was made out of hard plastic because it looked nicer that way. It was rigid and followed a neat path with minimal support. Technically a metal pipe coated with a glossy surface would have the same result, but costs more. Plastic is cheap too.

Makes sense. I was so proud I didn't break any of the breather hoses when removing the intake manifold, But when I replaced the manifold I didn't realize the expansion hose was trapped under the edge and snapped it in two. Stupid!

FWIW, I replaced this plastic pipe a while back with a section of flexible hose "from the garage" as everyone else did. A while later, that hose had turned stiff, brittle and leaky. Must have been the wrong kind. I ended up replacing it with the Jaguar part, figuring it was cheaper than a tow...

Yep, some rubber hoses are more durable than others. Transmission hose may be the best option for this particular application. I believe that is what I purchased for this replacement back in late 2014 and it has held up relatively well. That hose location certainly bakes there at the top of the engine bay....
