Window Issue Diagnosis?
#1

Hello Fellow XK8ers,
My passenger side window has stopped working in the down position. Before it failed, it would work intermittently. When it did worked, it worked well. When I lifted the outdoor handle the window would go down some, and then some more, all the way down (microswitch?) I can hear a clicking sound when either the up or down switch is activated on either door.
My question is: How to raise the window to access the areas I need to get to? I also need to diagnose a microswitch problem versus a window motor/regulator problem. I have an extra working window latch/switch unit to test the microswitch issue.
As usual, thank you all in advance for helping me keep my jag on the road (and dry inside)!

Well chip, for starters let's eliminate 2 things.
Is battery fully charged? (Can you put it on a charger for a bit?)
Inside switch: have you tried to raise window with door key? IOW put key in turn counter closkwise to trip window(up)/roof(up)/alarm (on).
If that doesn't work, press close while sitting in car, hold down listen. Do you hear click as thermal circuit breaker trips?
Yes? Ok window is jammed. (See below)
No? Ok press open, hold listen for same click. Hear it now? Yes ok you know what to listen for and power gets transmitted.
Press up nothing, no click either. Key turn doesn't work.
Let's probe key turn further.
Wish your signature said convertible or coupe. Odds are convertible.
Outside car, doors closed. Key in door. Turn clockwise.
Other windows open, right?
Roof goes down, right?
Turn key counter clockwise. Roof closes? 3 windows close? Alarm beeps on right?
FWIW either full key cycle takes less than 20 seconds.
Window jammed (referenced above). Can be debris or really cockeyed window alignment. Debris: i had a chunk of leftover broken window glass find its way into the regulator channel a year after window broke because:
It was cockeyed and I forced it to close past the 1/2 way point by holding close window button down (bad memory :-).
Chip if it was misaligned I believe you'd see some movement.
I didn't cover power to door because you said up worked. But wth: puddle light works? Door locks work?
Looking forward to your feedback/answers please
John

In order more or less:
The battery is less than 6 months old.
The key raises and lowers the driver's side window only.
I hear a click on both trying to lift or lower the window.
When it worked intermittently, it worked well, without any sign of jamming or misalignment.
Puddle light works.
When I try to lock the driver's side door with the key (the remote has never worked that well so key only), the system will cycle "lock/unlock" about 4 or 5 times.
I can't think of anything else. Thanks again!

Ok thx. Click says power is delivered. Locks cycling always means low(ish) battery charge in my 1998 - always.
Low battery can do lots but not immobilize window.
Right now (verifying) pass window no movement. Suspect bad regulator (not a big deal money or effort); hope for jam.
You've got to remove door card get a look. Have you done it b4? Need instructions?
My recollection = you have access to motor connector door card off window where it is. Apply 12volts (its early - test for 12volts :-)).
Likely bad regulator. Replacement instructions available. In fact there's an open thread with links right now. Say if you need help finding it. I'm at work, will check back on breaks.
