Default windows don't seal - lots of wind noise

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I recently purchased a 2004 XK8 convertible with 31,000 miles. Everything works fine except sometimes when I put the top up, the rear and front driver's side windows don't completely seal together when everything is closed up, leaving a less than 1/4" gap between them near the top. The gap narrows as it gets closer down towards the door. On rare occasions they do close completely together but not often. Is there any solution to this? Thanks. CW

Default Windows

You can "reset" or recalibrate the front windows. It's in the owners manual. It's worth a try. I believe you lower them to the very bottom (open) until you hear a faint click. Then you raise them all the way up until you hear a faint click.

It is probably just an adjustment that is needed, but figuring out where is going to require that you post some pics of both the front and rear windows, with attention focused on the areas where the windows enter the rubber channels along the top.

The "rare occasions" comment makes me also think that possibly something is loose in the front window mechanism.

Pics will help. Otherwise any reputable body shop could sort it out easily.

If the window reset does not work there are some videos on you tube by the 'rev sam' showing you how to adjust. But the window reset would be my first option.

Here you go, save you looking for it.

Hope you not a one post wonder.....................

Thanks for the information. Sorry but I have no way of posting pictures (no phone); nor am I a mechanic so I wouldn't be doing the work myself. I posted the question in order to acquire a little knowledge as to the cause of the problem so that when I approached a dealer or mechanic, I wouldn't be completely in the dark and would be able to determine if the solution to the problem which they would be proposing had any validity. Thanks again the answers here have been a help.

Thanks for posting the video. It's a help in understanding the cause of this problem and although I would be a little apprehensive to attempt to undertake this repair myself, at least it gives me an understanding of how a competent mechanic should be resolving the problem which is really what I was looking for when I posted the question. I had one mechanic yanking on the window without removing any of the side panels - also talking about putting in spacers. I didn't like the looks or sound of that. So what I've gotten from this is that a certified Jaguar mechanic would be the best solution to this. Thanks again for your trouble.

Default Both the door and rear quarter windows are adjustable

Casewhite41,

The alignment work is DIY-able. I’ve done the re-alignment of the rear quarter windows. The motor regulator has bolts in alignment slots. Door window is similar but with an additional height control bolt. Getting access is a 10min job and not too bad.

If you’re not doing the work yourself, expect the garage mechanic to take off the door card and the rear quarter panels to access these alignment bolts.

The X100’s market value is low, so the car rewards home DIY mechanics. If your little jobs have to go to a professional garage, I expect your car to be expensive to maintain.

Thanks for the information. It looks like I'm going to have to develop some level of mechanical ability to fix these minor problems to help keep the repair costs down. i hope this isn't going to be an ongoing thing with this model.

Thanks for the pdf file. Is this my problem? The windows seem to seat ok. They do align with each other. It's just that they don't come all the way together. They don't look misaligned.

Case,

A couple of questions:

When you discuss the relationship between the 2 windows, I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Windows closed. You're outside looking at door. Are the edges of the windows parallel top to bottom or do they diverge either top to bottom or bottom to top?

Move back to the rear window. Is there a gap between front window and rear rubber seal?

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, feel free to describe better.
.........

Windows closed. Take a sheet of loose leaf paper. Tear in 3 sections lengthwise. Open door. Place 1 strip along top of rear window rubber. Paper protrudes a few inches inside and outside. Close door.

Can you pull the paper out? (Not so good) was it easy? (Definitely needs adjustment)

Try same at bottom side of windows mating surfaces.

BTW, this adjustment sounds way more complicated than it is. After 2 or 3 times you'll have the door card off in 5minutes.

Let us know.

John

Default Home DIY is fun and will save you a tonne of money

That’s the spirit! Go for it! Your car is 15 years old so will have old car problems, ie blowing fuses, failing microswitches and will need general maintenance of a car that age. If you DIY you’ll save money and have fun in the garage.

Learning about the X100 has been a joy for me and the best tool is info from this Forum. We’re all here to help and I must have used the Search function on this forum at least 100 times.

Find a decent auto store to build up a basic tool kit and you’ll find them relatively inexpensive. Some stores even have a zero cost rental option for specialist tools.

Youtube also has a lot of info. Try our eminent Rev Sam aka sam1174, who has a lot of DIY videos.

As for you windows, it’s tough for us to see what the problem is without a pic though. Sounds like a gap between the rear quarter window and the door window. That’s an alignment problem. When both windows are up, can you physically pull the rear quarter window, at the top, to close the gap?

Talking Old Jags, little children and watermellon wine

^^^^ Yeah, you have to look at owning this car as a hobby. It's a challenge and very satisfying to correct the minor niggles - well, sometimes minor. If you need to take it to a shop every time it has an issue, it's not worth owning, and it will get cost prohibitive. Otherwise, we'd all be driving new Prius'.
